Consider Johan Santana's consistent filthiness on the mound, I'm surprised he had hadn't topped the 15 strikeout mark yet in his career. That changed this afternoon, racking up 17 K's to set the Minnesota Twins record.
Joe Christensen of the Star Tribune provided some live commentary.
Johan Santana had five strikeouts through two innings, nine through four innings, 11 through five innings and 14 through seven, matching his career high. His pitch count is 99. Pat Neshek approached the bullpen mound but sat back down. Looks like Johan is going back for the eighth.
With Neshek back warming, Santana struck out Gerald Laird for his 15th strikeout, establishing a new career high. The crowd is on its feet, cheering. He struck out Nelson Cruz setting a new team record. Crowd is still on its feet.
They sat back down and had to get right up. Johan fanned Jarrod Saltalamacchia for No. 17. He raised his fist in triumph. Doffed his cap to the crowd as he walked off. He has 112 pitches. Joe Nathan is warming up quickly. Looks like Santana is done. He’s given up two hits, both to Sammy Sosa.
The crowd booed when Nathan went out to pitch the ninth inning. Santana officially finished with 112 pitches, 83 for strikes.
