John Madden says that benching Griffin III an issue that puts into question the very essence of Football
Hall of Fame coach John Madden is one to loudly voice his disapproval of that decision, saying that the benching of the quarterback is something which may have more effect that predicted and was a bad decision in itself.
Madden said that Shanahan’s decision to bench the quarterback to ensure he would be ready and uninjured for the coming season was not in the spirit of Football. The Redskins are 3-10 and that may be a disappointing score and for everything the season may seem lost but there are still three games left to play and a healthy player should be included in that, especially if that is a starting player and has no issues with attending. Madden said that every game counts and the Redskins would have Griffin on the field if they had chances of making it to the playoffs and that was reason enough for them to have him playing whether they were or were not going to make it to the playoffs this season.
“I do know this: when the going goes tough you don’t quit,” Madden said. “And you don’t fold up. And you don’t go in the other direction. I think you stay with what you believe you stay with who you are, you stay with what you are.”
Madden said that the games they were playing were of the NFL regular season and had importance. Every game as important as the other one and playoffs were a major target but losing them did not mean that the rest of the games were lost and should be played half-heartedly.
“We have an integrity piece here too. You can say well they’re 3-10, they’re out of it, so now they can do these things. No you can’t,” Madden said. “This is still regular-season football. Draft order, that’s one small thing, but you still owe it to the people that are playing, that are still in the playoff picture.”
He said that the integrity of the game was being marred with such actions.
“And when you can affect that and you don’t affect it with an all-out performance, then I think that affects the integrity of the game … If you’re in the regular season,” he said “there’s only one way to play, and that’s to play your best people to win the game, every regular season game.”
