The John Wall Era In Kentucky Started Off With A Bang

John Wall was ridiculously highly touted coming out of high school, and now the hype will only grow. After one game at Kentucky, he's already responsible for one win, with his buzzer beater against Miami (OH).

It's often difficult for players like this to live up to the massive hype, but when a guy hits the game winner in his first game, you have to believe that he has a great chance to do some big things at this level.

Yeah we get it dude- You've posted this link on like every UK page on this site.  Way to dig deep to find some negative blog posts from UK fans three years ago for absolutely no reason.

Re: When John Calipari speaks what are you thinking? Reply

Brillant coach, who understands there is no text book way to build a program, and that at its basis, recruits love perception over reality and he brings talent on... Coach Cal has never been at a school where he didn't have to cut corners.. Coach Cal is a master in his prime....

This is what Kentucky Fans thought of John Calipari when he coached at Memphis...

And as far as a one year rental, it just seems silly to not recruit a player that would be an obvious upgrade at PG ,arguably the most important position on the court.  It just bit Williams in the butt- maybe it won't catch up to Coach K this year, but he grew up in your backyard-  You know they had the edge in recruiting him.  Admit it- they screwed up- you could be right about Duke's academic requirements, but no way Memphis has higher eligiblity requirements than UK.  Despite our great state's stereotypical reputation for low educational standards, the University of KY is actually quite highly regarded as far as academics for a state school.

I know, I'm just yanking yer chain... I'll send you a beer and we can have a drink and watch the season play out.

But I don't think Duke screwed up... they wanted Kyrie Irving as their PG and had been recruiting him for two years... the brass at Duke knew they'd have less chance at Irving if Wall was there, so they passed on Wall.

Allow me to remind you that technically, Memphis is a mid-major because they are in the Conference USA.  Temple, Xavier...there's a lot of great teams that come from mid major conferences.  Cleveland State even had a run in the NCAA Tourney last year.  I think those schools have much more talent to recruit from than they used to, and I think we'll see one win it all in the next 10 years.

I know, but after the past two years (alaa Gardner Webb & VMI) I have learned that you can't take those mid major teams for granted.  I don't even want to mention the overtime victory with Stanford in the Cancun Challenge.  Not a mid major, but definitely inferior in talent.  Wall stepped up again to send that one into overtime.  Why wasn't he recruited by Coach K & Roy again??

Can't speak for Roy but as far as Coach K and Duke goes I'm sure they just weren't interested in a one year rental.

And if I had to bet I'd bet that his SAT scores wouldn't have gotten him into Duke... or perhaps even Memphis... but somehow Coach Cal just has all the luck in that regard so I'm sure that's why he ended up at UK and wasn't recruited by Duke.

Look I'd be happy with the win over Miami OH too... it's certainly a lot better than a loss. I'm just saying that as an outside observer that I expected UK to have a much bigger margin of victory. Not that it matters now, several weeks after the game and after a UK win over UNC.

True true- I'm just excstatic after finally taking care of UNC today- you have to admit, when a guy gets hot from the three point line, it doesn't matter if it's a mid major or a powerhouse, it levels the playing field.  Especially when UK struggled on offense (free throws too).  I was actually happy with the win over Miami OH.  In the Gillispie era, they would have lost that game by 10-15 pts.

Way to bide your time... and I mean a long time... to make any kind of response to my comment. I'm sure you were waiting until Duke got a loss so you'd have a leg to stand on to make your point instead of just coming on down and saying something right away.

And so far as it goes, every team including your beloved cats would have a tough time winning at Wisconsin. Just ask anyone who's gone there to play since Bo Ryan got there. I think their record is like 120-10 at home since Ryan took over. And Duke losing on the road by a couple to a tough team like Wisconsin is a hard cry from barely winning on your home court over a mid major.

Now beating UNC? That's impressive. But don't compare Duke's road loss to a BCS conference team to UK's last second home win against a mid major.

I'll take it, plus today's win over UNC.  I hope Duke doesn't have to match up with any powerhouses like WISCONSIN any time soon-  Gimmie a break.  All teams have struggles early on- especially when they have 3 freshman starting!  Naysayers take a good look- it's back to the good ole days- this is your past, present and future- hating on UK- enjoy.

Yeah, way to win on a last second shot against Miami of Ohio.

Wow, if this is the best UK can do with this lineup is squeak out a win over a mid major on their home court... then they really need some more time to gel. I expected a much bigger margin of victory for the 'cats.
