One of the reasons why baseball has always been one of my favorite sports is that you see some incredibly weird stuff happen pretty regularly. And today was no exception.
In the 3rd inning of Friday's Sox/Yankees game at Yankee Stadium with runners on first and second, Kevin Youkilis pounded a ball to left field that Johnny Damon apparently caught. Instead, Damon snowconed the ball, nailed the wall, the ball popped out of his glove and then rested on the top of the wall for a full two seconds before finally falling back into the field of play. Youkilis wound up with a triple and both runners scored, as the ball technically never left the yard.
I have never seen anything like this before, and I'm pretty sure I'll never see anything like it again. The combination of physics, angles, sheer luck, and Damon's Neanderthal-like appearance are simply too much to ever bring together again. You have a better chance of winning the lottery while getting struck by lightning.
But what made it even better was that the Yankees lost. Sweet.
