Some members of the media are making a big deal out of some recent statements by Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon. So what did he say? When asked about the possibility of him playing for the Yankees after his current contract was over, Papelbon was rather frank:This has been all over the place (online, and around local Boston area media, at least), but I'm having a hard time figuring out why. This seems like one of the most obvious statements ever.
If the Red Sox allow Papelbon's contract to expire after the 2011 season without first signing him to an extension, then logic would dictate that as a free agent, Papelbon would field offers from any and all teams that show interest in signing him.
If you look at the Yankees right now, it would make sense that in the winter of 2011, they'll probably be looking for a closer. Mariano Rivera can't pitch forever, and if Papelbon is a free agent, then they would be foolish NOT to take a look at him as a possible solution, assuming that he continues pitching well.
Should Red Sox fans (and the Boston media) be upset about this? Nope. Is it even worth mentioning? Nope. It's nothing but common sense. If he leaves, then Daniel Bard will most likely just take his spot anyway. Welcome to capitalism, ladies and gentlemen. Let's not get too crazy, alright? Thanks.
