Jose Mourinho has given up on defending the title race. The Real Madrid manager admitted his side had next to no chance of acquiring the La Liga title for a second successive season because of poor performances.

The former Chelsea manager declared La Liga a lost campaign in the wake of a 2-2 draw against Espanyol. These statements suggest Jose Mourinho has set his eyes on the Champions League trophy. Well, that may be the case but Jose Mourinho has promised to field a competitive side in La Liga for the rest of the season.

Real Madrid were unimpressive at the Santiago Bernabeu once again on Sunday night. Cristiano Ronaldo and Fabio Coentrao gave Real Madrid the lead after Sergio Garcia drew first blood for Espanyol.

The La Liga champions seemed destined for a victory, but fate had other plans. Juan Albin slipped into Real Madrid’s defense to provide his side a memorable equalizer. The draw has provided Barcelona with a 13-point lead over Real Madrid in La Liga, following their 4-1 victory over Atletico Madrid later on the same night.

“I think winning the league is almost impossible, but we still have perform better, because if we improve in La Liga, we improve in the Champions League,” Jose Mourinho informed in his post-match press conference.

“We are not as good as before. We do not have the same joy and confidence, and we struggle to score as much as last year. I have never been in this situation, but I do not lack strength.

“We will continue to fight for the title, even though it seems impossible, because this is Real Madrid. Everyone has to stand up for themselves - for ambition, personal dignity, and the Real Madrid name.”

Jose Mourinho also reflected upon the performance of his summer signing Luka Modric. Critics have lambasted against midfielder for disrupting Real Madrid’s team chemistry. Jose Mourinho, who substituted Luka Modric even though he struck the wood work in the first half, believes the Croatian star has already proven an asset for the Real Madrid.

“[Luka] Modric was not having a bad game, but I took him off as a strategic decision. I was sorry to remove him as he was doing okay,” Jose Mourinho added.

Jose Mourinho, who has two Champions League trophies under his belt at the age of 49 years, is expected to bring go deep into the Champions League. Last season, Real Madrid were robbed off the chance to appear in the Champions League final by Bayern Munich on penalties.
