What I am about to do is unjust, it is unfair, it may be just plain wrong. And yet here I go, shunning justice, trampling what is fair, reveling in what is wrong. And yet - though I may be wrong to revel - I am not wrong about what is wrong.
The Players' Championship is a major championship. Wrong. It is a premier event with a world-class field and a tremendous purse and an elegant trophy but it is not a major. It has a signature hole just like The Masters' but it is not a major. Its field is deeper than the US Open's but it is not a major. Its purse is greater than the British Open's but it is not a major. The players support and revere it, like they do the PGA Championship, but it is not a major. So why not? Well, mostly because it just takes time. But the "why" is less important than the "not". And how do we really know that it is not, that it is not a major, despite its signature hole and deep field and huge purse and great support? How? Well it is obvious. Tiger skipped it. Not that he wanted to mind you, he needed at some point some elective knee surgery. That he elected to have it at a time when it would cause him to miss The Players' says it all. The Players', while great, is not major.
Sergio Garcia is a major champion. Wrong. It is fitting that the winner of this year's Players' is a great, but not major, golfer. Sergio Garcia, great but not major. For 11 years, since the duel between Sergio and Tiger at the 1997 PGA at Winged Foot, the golf world has waited for Sergio to elevate and win a major. Sergio, to his credit, has tried and his game continues to improve, so much so that he's now won this presitigious event. But will he win a major any time soon? No. And why noy? Look at how he won today. A four foot putt, which he could 2-putt for the win. What would a major champion do? Make it. What did Sergio do? He 2-putted. He won, but he won without style, he won without grace, he won without flair. Sergio, while great, is not major. And - like The Players' Championship - he won't be any time soon.
