Julio Franco Turns 97 Today
8/23/06
I'll have what he's having. Ok, aside from the 20 egg whites every morning.Today is Julio Franco's birthday, his 48th (i lied above, sorry) and he's playing major league baseball with more vigor than just about every spoiled player in their 20's. Franco, a pinch hitter for the Mets this season, isn't just taking up space on a roster either. The walking fountain of youth is hitting .272 in 114 at bats, with 16 RBI and 10 runs. Clearly stealing from all laws of aging, Franco has also accumulated 5 stolen bases.
Julio insists he will play into his 50's and I'm not going to be the first to doubt him. On a day when the headlines in Boston read, "Sore Hamstring or Hurt Feelings", combined with the perpetual TO saga, it forces me to appreciate the real men in sports.
Happy Birthday Julio.
