Falcons lose Julio Jones for the season to foot injury
The news that came from that X-ray room, however, was just about as bad as it gets. FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reported on Tuesday afternoon that the Falcons' "initial determination" is that Jones will miss the remainder of the season with a right foot injury. Jones will get a second opinion to confirm the diagnosis, but the Falcons are "not optimistic."
This is an absolutely devastating loss to a team that was already among the league's biggest disappointments. Jones was enjoying a true breakout campaign, and was on pace to top Jerry Rice's second-best all-time receiving yardage mark for a single season.
The Falcons will now move forward with a gimpy Roddy White as their No. 1 receiver, and a perennially disappointing Harry Douglas as their second option. The loss will likely be a significant blow to the production of quarterback Matt Ryan, while the lack of an elite field stretcher may also affect underneath pass catchers such as Tony Gonzalez.
Entering their bye with a 1-4 record and coming off a terribly disappointing upset loss, Jones' injury just might put the Falcons' morale at an all-time low. I'd be surprised if this Super Bowl-hopeful squad ended up in the playoffs.
