Just Maybe, A College Football 'Semifinal' Playoff in 2011
READ MORE:
It's not much of a playoff, but the chances of college football adopting one is looking more and more likely. The Plus-1 format appears to be gaining ground according to Lenn Robbins of the New York Post.
"There haven't been any official discussions among conference commissioners, but the overwhelming sense is that that's where we're headed," one conference source said. "There's simply too much money at stake and there's been too much debate with the current system."
Move in the right direction? Probably. Eliminating complaints, disappointment and fan upheaval? Doubtful.

I'm in favor of the Plus-1 system but also aware it will simply shift the debate, not fix the system. The BCS 4th-ranked team will obviously complain that they should have been 3rd (better chance at final). 5th place team will complain they should have been 4th and so on. With so much money on the line, it's understandable. My only concern with any move towards a playoff is diminishing the value of the regular season. At this stage, the Plus 1 system is the right balance between making sure the National Champion is decided on the field and not by a computer while maintaining the importance of the schedule. No team losing 2-games should be considered, so I'd bring on the debate between 4 and 5 for now.

Would you be satisfied with this addition to the college football system?

Who would it have been last season? Obviously OSU, Florida and Michigan, but I think that 4th team would have been a HUGE argument...

LSU? Sure, they were arguably the most talented team in the country, but they had 2 losses, just like USC. What about undefeated Boise State? Was the Big East strong enough for 1-loss Louisville to get the chance? Was the Big 10 strong enough for 1-loss Wisconsin to give them a 3rd team in the top 4? I think that Auburn should also have gotten consideration, considering they beat 2 of the teams (Florida and LSU) who would be strong candidates, and have only 2 losses, just like LSU and USC. In case you didn't notice, that's 6 teams, who all have a rather legitimate claim to that 4th and final spot.

I think I would be MORE satisfied with them at least TRYING to make it more fair/accurate, but in the end, there will always be grumbling...

Wait...UNLESS there was a 64-team tournament... (kidding)

I definitely agree. Even if there is some debate over who the 4th team should be (or maybe more of them, when there is only 1 or 2 teams ahead of the pack), something like this would be a win-win for the fans. I agree that an 8-team playoff would be better, but maybe this could be the first step towards that.

Baby steps...

"and the title game during the week off between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl?"

I've always loved this idea. I think it would be a great way to incorporate the Pro and college games, and make for a VERY exciting 3 weeks.

But some players were complaining about OSU's long layoff before the title game, and my only concern is that this format my cause something similar.

The new system might help, there will always be the "bubble teams", as everyone else has said.  Now if we can dump some of the Sta-Puft Marshmallow Bowl games, things would be great.

When was the last time a 16th ranked team had an arguement for a National Title?  How about the 8th ranked team?  They never do.  So Why worry about them.  The top 4 is perfect, although the midmajors will still get screwed but who cares?  I don't want to play the Boise St.'s anymore anyway.  If the SOS will be weighed as it was before then it would end their arguement.

Why get rid of the pathetic and boring lower level bowls?  If the Okie states of the world want to go to the armpit of America and go to the Independence Bowl, why take that away from them?  I have no desire to go watch the Motor City Bowl in Detroit, but it seems that there are 30-40 thousand fans that don't seem to mind too much.  There isn't a problem at the bottom of the bowl system, there is a problem at the top.

Your first paragraph is ridiculous.

Of course you don't want to play someone like Boise State again...they beat you guys, and embarrassed your storied program.

SOS IS weighed in...which is why you guys were given the privilege of playing an undefeated team in your bowl game, even though you had 2 losses.

And like I showed earlier, there were 6 teams that had a legitimate claim to that #4 spot. But none of them really would have had a claim as #1 or #2 to go to the NC game. So if you're going to open it up to a 4th, then 8 teams wouldn't be all that different.

P.S. Auburn finished the season ranked 9th in the nation. They also gave Florida their lone loss. You really think a 8th team couldn't win?

It was sarcasm.  Thanks for playing.  Obviously there is a chance of any team beating any other team on any given day, proof again with Boise St..

Your third sentence is more than ridiculous...  OU played in the Fiesta bowl because they won the big twelve.  Not because of SOS.  The Big twelve has a tie in with the Fiesta bowl, Boise St. was given the privilage of playing the big 12 represenitive, not the other way around.  But I understand your bitterness, Boston college will never get a chance to play in a NC game if they go to the top 4, your odds hardly improve with the top 8, but if we manage to get to 32 maybe you'll feel important...until the end of the first round.

Sorry I missed the sarcasm, but 90% of OU fans around here have nothing but complaints about one thing or another.

And I have an NFL team that does fine, I don't need to worry all that much about BC. As long as they maintain their excellent academic standards and continue the longest bowl winning streak in the NCAA, I have no beef with their performance.

Thats a great point!  Mind if i use that one?  We went from 0-4 to 11-3 and big 12 champs, nice turn around.

Geez, are you capable of making a post without slamming someone?

Huh?  You lost me a little.

If I think I understand what you're saying, the 16th team shouldn't be in contention.  But I wasn't even talking about that.

Someone will always complain about whatever system is in place.  I just think there's too many lower-tier bowls.  So I'm actually in agreement with you that I wouldn't go see the Weedwhacker Bowl either, which is why I think a few should be eliminated.
