Just Maybe, A College Football 'Semifinal' Playoff in 2011
7/17/07

It's not much of a playoff, but the chances of college football adopting one is looking more and more likely. The Plus-1 format appears to be gaining ground according to Lenn Robbins of the New York Post.
"There haven't been any official discussions among conference commissioners, but the overwhelming sense is that that's where we're headed," one conference source said. "There's simply too much money at stake and there's been too much debate with the current system."
Move in the right direction? Probably. Eliminating complaints, disappointment and fan upheaval? Doubtful.

I'm in favor of the Plus-1 system but also aware it will simply shift the debate, not fix the system. The BCS 4th-ranked team will obviously complain that they should have been 3rd (better chance at final). 5th place team will complain they should have been 4th and so on. With so much money on the line, it's understandable. My only concern with any move towards a playoff is diminishing the value of the regular season. At this stage, the Plus 1 system is the right balance between making sure the National Champion is decided on the field and not by a computer while maintaining the importance of the schedule. No team losing 2-games should be considered, so I'd bring on the debate between 4 and 5 for now.

Would you be satisfied with this addition to the college football system?

Who would it have been last season? Obviously OSU, Florida and Michigan, but I think that 4th team would have been a HUGE argument...

LSU? Sure, they were arguably the most talented team in the country, but they had 2 losses, just like USC. What about undefeated Boise State? Was the Big East strong enough for 1-loss Louisville to get the chance? Was the Big 10 strong enough for 1-loss Wisconsin to give them a 3rd team in the top 4? I think that Auburn should also have gotten consideration, considering they beat 2 of the teams (Florida and LSU) who would be strong candidates, and have only 2 losses, just like LSU and USC. In case you didn't notice, that's 6 teams, who all have a rather legitimate claim to that 4th and final spot.

I think I would be MORE satisfied with them at least TRYING to make it more fair/accurate, but in the end, there will always be grumbling...

Wait...UNLESS there was a 64-team tournament... (kidding)
