It's not much of a playoff, but the chances of college football adopting one is looking more and more likely. The Plus-1 format appears to be gaining ground according to Lenn Robbins of the New York Post."There haven't been any official discussions among conference commissioners, but the overwhelming sense is that that's where we're headed," one conference source said. "There's simply too much money at stake and there's been too much debate with the current system."Move in the right direction? Probably. Eliminating complaints, disappointment and fan upheaval? Doubtful.
I'm in favor of the Plus-1 system but also aware it will simply shift the debate, not fix the system. The BCS 4th-ranked team will obviously complain that they should have been 3rd (better chance at final). 5th place team will complain they should have been 4th and so on. With so much money on the line, it's understandable. My only concern with any move towards a playoff is diminishing the value of the regular season. At this stage, the Plus 1 system is the right balance between making sure the National Champion is decided on the field and not by a computer while maintaining the importance of the schedule. No team losing 2-games should be considered, so I'd bring on the debate between 4 and 5 for now.
Would you be satisfied with this addition to the college football system?
