Justin Smith undergoing surgery this week, out 3 months
Justin Smith initially sustained a partially torn triceps in a Dec. 16 loss to the New England Patriots, due to which he was forced to the sidelines for the remainder of the season. But the San Francisco 49ers couldn’t possibly imagine surviving the playoffs without the 12-year veteran Justin Smith, who returned back to the field for the team’s post season games.
Sporting a brace on his left forearm, Justin Smith kept playing through the injury, although he was hindered by the torn triceps which is evident by his numbers in the postseason. The San Francisco 49ers survived three playoffs rounds en route to the Super Bowl, where they lost 34-31 to the Baltimore Ravens despite breaking their opponent’s moment in the second-half.
Justin Smith had an over powering effect on the San Francisco 49ers defense until the injury caught up with him. Still Justin Smith played 89.7 percent of the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive plays in the playoffs. San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith also indirectly took the blunt of Justin Smith’s injury. Aldon Smith 19.5 sacks through 13 games this season but he only got his first sack and a quarterback hit in a long stretch since during Sunday’s Super Bowl loss.
While playing 14 games this season, Justin Smith registered only 3.0 sacks, his second-worst numbers his entire NFL career. Justin Smith did not get a single sack in the postseason.
Justin Smith is expected to miss around three months while rehabbing from surgery to repair the torn triceps. Hence, It’s likely Justin Smith will return in late-July just in time for the opening of the San Francisco 49ers’ training camp.
The four-time Pro Bowler Justin Smith is entering the last year of contract six-year, $45 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Justin smith is due to earn $8 million next season.
