Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-USA TODAY SportsAccording to ESPN's Buster Olney, Justin Verlander has agreed to a contract extension with the Detroit Tigers that will pay him a total of $180M over the next 7 years.

Olney says that the deal also has a vesting option for $22M, which could potentially bring the overall value of the contract up to $202M.

The deal will keep Verlander locked up until he's 36 years old, and gives the Tigers a solid ace for the next few years, at least.

In 2012, Verlander finished 2nd in Cy Young voting, only a year after winning both the AL Cy Young and AL MVP awards in 2011.

Verlander led the AL in strikeouts 3 of the past 4 seasons, and won the pitching Triple Crown in 2011, after leading the AL in wins, strikeouts, and ERA.

Verlander was already scheduled to be paid $20M in both 2013 and 2014. The extension pays him $28M per year from 2015-2019, with the $22M vested option for 2020.

What do you think of this contract extension? Are the Tigers smart to extend Verlander through 2019? Or was it a bit too much money and a bit premature, since he was already signed through 2014? What's your take?

Great deal for Verlander, the tigers, and all Tigers fans. yes

Hope you guys made it to some Spring Training games. When I saw him, my heart skipped a beat. Kate Upton didn't deserve him anyway.  :-)   WE need to go to some ST games together.  Next year my friend.

A World Series appearance isn't delivering? C'mon Scott, I know you know how random the postseason can be when two of the worst Cardinals teams of the last 8 years or so are the two with championship rings.

You just proved my point. The Tigers have $568 million invested in 3 players in a sport where it has been proven more times then not that the team with the highest paid players and/or payroll doesn't always win championships. Tell me once again how tempered the expectations should be given the type of $$$ the Tigers have given out in recent years?

Time to start delivering in the postseason
