Juventus boss Conte not surprised by 2-0 defeat to Napoli
Juventus manager Antonio Conte is not surprised by the 2-0 defeat to Napoli his side endured on Sunday night. The Turin boss believes the amount of money injected into the club since the arrival of Rafael Benitez was sure to pay off at some time.
Napoli became the second club this season to defeat Juventus, after Fiorentina, but even in the defeat there was little loss for the Bianconeri. Conte’s side still possesses a nine-point lead over second-placed Roma in the league and with seven games remaining in the season they have all but won the Scudetto.
Nonetheless, Sunday night was all about the Campania club. Napoli dominated Juventus from the first to the last whistle at the Stadio San Paolo. It was an impressive display by Benitez’s men, but Conte was little impressed.
Conte was quick to remind Napoli that they were 17 points behind them on the table even after spending a treasure chest on money.
“They're out of Europe and they're 17 points behind us, despite spending far more than us,” Conte said. “We were up against a side who have spent 100 million euros and were built to win, not just to take part. We only spent 25 million and they've spent more in one year than we have in the past three seasons combined, yet they're still 17 points adrift.”
Meanwhile, Benitez accepted his club had to improve more to compete with Juventus throughout the season. The Spaniard explained that the Turin based club had a great squad and a steady and huge cash flow to keep the club up.
“We still need time,” Benitez told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Juve have 300 million euros and a great squad. They didn't have [Carlos] Tevez today, but there was [Daniel Pablo] Osvaldo and then [Mirko] Vucinic on the bench, who are top quality players. Whenever Juve lack one first-team regular, there's always another of the same quality to step in.”
Napoli have defeated big teams at the Stadio San Paolo this season. The list includes teams such as Arsenal, Marseille, Borussia Dortmund, Roma, Inter Milan and Juventus. Benitez believes his side needs to increase their concentration levels in order to record better results. The former Liverpool manager believes his side needs to play with the same intensity against all opposition.
Benitez added that if Napoli are able to show consistency they will surely be in contention for silverware very soon.
