I'm not exactly the biggest Chiefs fan. I mean, I could care less about the team. But when I saw a blog post from The Legend of Cecilio Guante about the current quarterback depth chart for the Kansas City Chiefs, I nearly choked on my microwaved bean burrito. This is your current Chiefs QB depth chart.
1. Tyler Thigpen
2. Ingle Martin IV
3. Quinn Gray
God is that ever scary. That's of course the result of original starter Brody Croyle being more fragile than Rex Grossman and his backup Damon Huard tearing ligaments in his thumb. Both guys are now out for the remainder of the year.
Anyway, here's what we know about Kansas City's three current healthy quarterbacks, besides the fact that they all suck.
1. Tyler Thigpen - A 7th round draft pick who went to vaunted Coastal Carolina where he dry humped a skeleton. In a start against the Falcons this year, he went went 14-36 for 128 yards with a touchdown and three picks. And he's your starter.
2. Ingle Martin - According to his career stats, he apparently kneeled down on two plays back in 2006 when he was with the Packers.
3. Quinn Gray - Probably will soon be the starter, seeing as he's managed to at least get into 11 NFL games.
But here's the worst thing. Between these three guys, they have a combined 4 starts in the NFL. But is this the worst NFL depth chart ever? In an effort to determine that, I took a look back to see if there was any group worse than this one. And no, I didn't go back to 1965, I just looked at recent depth charts of the past 10 years.
Here's who even comes close.
2001 Carolina Panthers - They had Chris Weinke as their starter for the majority of the season and went a putrid 1-15. Weinke was, of course, awful. He threw 11 TDs to 19 INTs. But as bad as he was, there wasn't much reason to turn to his backups. They were Dameyune Craig and Matt Lytle. Craig threw 8 total passes in his career, and Lytle threw 30. Yikes.
1998 San Diego Chargers - This was Ryan Leaf's worst year by far. How bad was it? He threw 2 TDs and 15 INTs while completing 45% of his passes. Obviously, that was pretty bad. But what was worse was that he split time over the course of the season with Craig Whelihan, who himself threw 8 TDs to 19 INTs, all while completing 46% of his passes. So that's two quarterbacks who threw for 10 TDs, 34 INTs, with a combined completion percentage of essentially 46%. And here's the scary thing, there were no other QBs on this '98 squad. It was essentially Leaf and a Leaf clone. In fact, according to Pro Football Reference, Leaf and Whelihan's '98 seasons both made the 15 worst single seasons by a pro quarterback ever, which is nuts when you think about it. It's still a wonder how this team won 5 games during the season.
And that, my friends, is pretty much it. If Thigpen starts the rest of the season for the Chiefs, you could make an argument that the 2001 Panthers are right there with them in terms of top to bottom awfulness in terms of the QB depth chart. The 1998 Chargers, however, I think have to be marveled at just for their sheer incompetence. I always thought Ryan Leaf was awful, but good lord, Whelihan was pretty much just as bad, and only lasted two years in the NFL.
As of right now, the 2008 Chiefs are the runaway favorites for worst QB depth chart in recent memory. And in all honesty, I can't see that changing anytime soon.

) It's a pretty sad lookin list. As you stated, Gray will probably be the best shot of starting the rest of the year; but Thigpen will most likely be given more of an opportunity, because, let's face it, it can't get any worse right now.
