The Race To Lose Every Game Is On
9/22/08
Every year I have a dream, a dream I have yet to see in my lifetime. I want to see a pro football team go 0-16. That may sound strange, but really it's not that crazy to want to see happen. It's the chance to witness something historic. No one in 20 years will remember the 2007 Dolphins, because they managed to win one game. But if you go 0-16, that's something that'll be talked about for ages.In fact, I'm convinced it's harder to to go 0-16 than it is to go 16-0. It requires a lot of dedication to go 0-16, a dedication to complete and utter sucking.
Fortunately, we have a few teams this year that seem completely capable of at least making a run at going 0-16. Currently the winless teams in the NFL are the Bengals, Browns, Lions, Texans, Chiefs, Chargers, and Rams.
I think we can immediately toss out the Chargers, Browns, and Texans. They'll all easily win a game at some point. That leaves us with four teams. So let's break down how close each of the remaining teams might do. One good thing to keep in mind is that of these remaining four teams, only once do any of the four play one of the other teams, thereby increasing the odds of a true 0-16 season.
Detroit Lions: This team should win a game at some point because, frankly, they have too much talent to be an 0-16 team. Kitna isn't a very good quarterback, but he's destined to have at least one game where he fully connects with his frightening receiving core. The good news though about the Lions chances for going 0-16 is that the team just got annihilated by my 49ers. The 49ers are not a good team. No one, I repeat, no one, should be losing to the 49ers by more than two touchdowns. This team has all the makings of a squad ready to quit on its coach and the season and they have a tough schedule. Prediction: 3-13
Cincinnati Bengals: This team is similar to the Detroit Lions. Simply too talented in my mind to go 0-16. Carson Palmer has TJ Houshmandzadeh and Chad Ocho Cinco to throw to. Plus all those guys Palmer, TJ, and even Ocho Cinco have too much pride to go 0-16. But the loss to the Giants on Sunday was impressive. It's just what you need to start a long losing streak. You play a good team, push them to the brink, and then lose in overtime. That's a tremendously tough loss, and enough to make a team quit for an extended period of time. The one thing that'll definitely keep them from going 0-16 as well is that they play the Chiefs in the final week of the season. Prediction: 3-13
St. Louis Rams: Now this is a team that has the look of an 0-16 team, even though they still have Marc Bulger, Stephen Jackson, and Orlando Pace. This team has quit on coach Scott Linehan to such a degree that it's even noticeable to the average fan. In addition, this team has given up 38, 41, and 37 points in three straight games. My one concern about this team is that it's inevitable Linehan will get fired before the season's end, which will likely fire up the team enough for them to pull out a win. Prediction: 2-14, but if Linehan somehow stays on (which won't happen) 1-15
Kansas City Chiefs: Now this a team that has all. Or perhaps I should say nothing at all. They have no defense, no offense, no quarterback, and essentially no coach - because Herm Edwards is terrible. What I'm especially impressed with is that this team may have an even worse group of quarterbacks than the Dolphins did last year. Right now Brody Croyle and Damon Huard are injured, Tyler Thigpen was an absolute nightmare on Sunday against Atlanta throwing 3 picks (and at one point he was 1-10 for -4 yards with 1 INT), and they have some other guy named Ingle Martin who I've never heard of. And while Croyle will likely will be back soon, he's injury prone and completely untested. The one issue with the Chiefs is that they're still trying, but I'm sure that loss to the Falcons made them say, "Man, we really suck." Hopefully that'll keep their spirits down, way down. But this is my team, folks. I think they can do it. Put the Chiefs down for 0-16. This is the year where the dream finally happens. Prediction: 0-16
