The word on Twitter is that Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood is going to retire today. If the reports are true, it will bring to an end one of the more intriguing yet unfulfilled pitching careers in Major League Baseball history.
Wood exploded onto the scene in 1998, winning 13 games and striking out 233 batters on his way to the NL Rookie of the Year. However, he missed the 1999 season with Tommy John surgery and has never been able to fully return to the dominance we saw in that first season. If today is indeed Woods last game, he leaves as a 2 time All-Star with a modest record of 86-75, far short of the expectations set when he burst onto the scene as a rookie.
As his career comes to a close today after numerous injuries, rehab stints and relief appearances with the Cubs, Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees, let's flashback to one of the most dominant pitching performances a rookie has ever had.

Kerry Wood was the definitive Cub. Huge potential, but rather disappointing in the end.
