Kevin Durant signs with Jay-Z's Roc Nation, gets dirt off shoulder
In fact, you can see Jay-Z and Durant signing their Roc Nation Sports contract in the image at left. You would think millionaires like Kevin Durant and Jay-Z would have nicer cameras on their smartphones, but I suspect that these days Jay-Z is probably contractually obliged to use a Samsung phone for everything no matter what.
Roc Nation Sports announced today that Jay-Z's sports agency has signed Kevin Durant. Durant joins New York Yankees infielder Robinson Cano, New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith, and No. 3 overall WNBA draft pick Skylar Diggins as part of the Roc Nation stable.
But does Jay-Z not own one percent of the Brooklyn Nets, and do NBA rules not prohibit a team owner from representing an NBA player in contract negotiations? He does, and they do.
The catch here is that Roc Nation will represent Durant only in his marketing pursuits -- Durant currently has marketing deals with Nike, Sprint, Gatorade, Panini. Skullcandy headphones, BBVA and 2K Sports. Roc Nation is rumored to be signing Nww York Giants receiver Victor Cruz to a similar "marketing only" representation deal.
Durant remains with Creative Artists Agency in terms of his NBA contract negotiations. Durant is signed with Oklahoma City through the 2015-16 NBA season, so he has no need for NBA contract negotiations for the next three years.
