Kevin Garnett Close to Being Dealt to the Boston Celtics
Yes, you read that right. Dumb (McHale) and Dumber (Ainge) are reportedly very close to agreeing to a blockbuster trade that would catapult the Celtics from the bottom of the Eastern Conference near the top.
According to sources, the current deal on the table has the 6-foot-11 Garnett heading to Boston and the Celtics dealing away Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff's hefty expiring contract and Rajon Rondo. There may also be other players and draft picks involved.

It's not quite done, but three industry sources — including one close to the Celtics — told FOXSports.com that it's extremely close and could become official within the next 48 hours.

"It's basically done," one source said. "If it does happen, this will make the Celtics relevant again."

Wow. We've heard so many of these rumors that I think I'll wait until it's finalized. But I'm a little disappointed that I won't be able to call Danny Ainge a complete fool anymore. A combination of Ray Allen - Kevin Garnett - Paul Pierce is at least good for a top 4 seed in the East, right?

Update: Eric Weiss at Draft Express is essentially calling it a done deal.

Oh god...there is hope...maybe.

"It's believed that the latest incarnation of the deal would require Boston to package Gerald Green and Sebastian Telfair with Jefferson and Ratliff in exchange for Garnett. It's also likely that other players and/or draft picks would be added to the package if the deal gets Garnett's signoff."

I wouldn't mind seeing them give up Green or Jefferson for KG, but I would rather not see them give up both, if they can help it.

And by the way, CF...the Allen-Garnett combo is very good, but don't forget about Paul Pierce.

When you learn to speak english, you can talk to me. Also, you know nothing about basketball so why don't you worry about your own teams and let the REAL fan do the talking. I will guarantee that if the trade goes through, the Celtics win 49 games.

The key to all of this is in the middle... IF the deal gets Garnett's signoff.  KG has earlier this off-season nixed the idea of going to Boston, and there's been nothing up here to change from that (as of this morning's papers, OR the Timberwolves web site). I'm still firmly in the camp that this is still rumor, and I would tell McHale NOT to go for this unless Boston puts more in their side of the deal.

If you know how to speak it, then do it. Don't be a lazy piece, it is not hard to write a couple more letters. Just to let you know, because it makes you look illiterate.

As an outsider (not a fan of either team), I wanted to make a quick observation about the way the NBA lottery can turn a team (league?) on its head.

Prior to the draft, when talk of the Celtics getting the top pick was running rampant, it seemed that the direction of the team was to trade Paul Pierce and build the youth movement around Gerald Green, Al Jefferson, and Greg Oden (who would have been the pick).

Now, roughly a month later, the movement seems to mortgage the future (by trading Green AND Jefferson) to make a run in the inferior Eastern Conference!  Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett would make one hell of a Triumvirate, but at what price?

I'm with Pat...if I was a Celtic fan, I wouldn't want to lose both Green and Jefferson (even for Garnett).

Right now, it doesn't matter to me. I would rather see the Celtics be good for 3-4 years now, then wait 4-5 years for them to even make the playoffs but that is just my opinion.

I edited it cause I can't say that stuff on here.

What the hell is BAAAAAAAAASTEN?? If you are trying to make fun of me its Bosten, no one says Boston.

The Celtics had a couple bad years, like every team does, it happens to the best teams in the world. With Ray Allen and Paul Pierce the Celtics are contenders in the East and if KG came here they go to the top of the list. Why would KG not want to make it to the finals? Cause it is much easier to get there in the east then it is the West.

If you want to talk like a rtrd well tlkin abt sports go sumwer else. This is a place for intelligent people to talk about sports, not teenagers who made up a knew language.

ok, i know how to speak english, i am no lazy piece, i have ahd this conversation 100x im not having it again. i was kidding around trying to be nice and saying that i think the Celts would be good with KG. OK? just chill.

How couldn't they be?? Well I don't know, they would have the Best 3 man combo of players in the East, which could probably lead them far in the playoffs, if not the finals but that is a waste.

Also, why do people think that players will leave because the city is cold? Because I sure as hell know that if I was a player, if my team wins and it is a cold city, I am not leaving. I am just gonna use my money to dress first. The only factor is winning.

He doesn't have a choice if he is traded he is traded and if is traded to a Cold City, and wins there, he will stay. I can understand the fact that he would leave if they suck but if they win he will not leave.

But that's the crazy part about this deal...neither does Ainge. So how are these 2 going to work out a deal where BOTH of them get screwed in the end? I'm really interested in seeing what they come up with...it could be revolutionary.

This would be a disaster.  Paul Peirce would not take being the third option on a team, even if it was winning.  Plus why would KG want to be a on a team, that might work for one year, and would only get to the Finals at best and end up getting killed there?

#1: Paul Pierce was fine with being the 2nd option behind Antoine Walker. He won't mind taking a back seat to KG and Ray Allen. It's not like it comes with a pay cut, and Pierce has proven over and over again that he would do ANYTHING to win. If there's one thing we know about Pierce, it's that his attitude WON'T be an issue.

#2: Excellent question. But if that's where the Wolves are willing to trade him, and the options are to stay in Minny or go to Boston, then I think the choice is clear.

I heard that the deal is official! After a lot of bargaining the Celtics finally agreed to the trade ater Minnesota agreed to include F Kevin McHale in the deal. McHale is reportedly happy to be back in Boston! LOL

Offensively, Antoine was ALWAYS the me-first guy, and the offense reflected that. Name another PF who took as many shots as Walker, especially from the outside.

Ugh...thinking about it is making me sick lol.

Danny Ainge=Dunce, AGAIN. We have no bench what so ever after Trading away Green, Big Al, Telfair and Theo, oh and a pick. I LOVE KG, but not at this price.

It's funny. Most Celtic fans have been complaining about how miserable the team has been. Begging Danny Ainge to make a move.

They're instantly East Contenders for at least the next two seasons. And suddenly he's an even bigger idiot "for morgaging the future." If you were that confident in Al Jefferson and Gerald Green then why were you so miserable.

I think this is a spectacular move by Ainge. I'd rather contend for 2-3 years than be good for 5-6. This also instantly makes the Celtics watchable, adds a great deal of revenue to the franchise and above all else -- great for the NBA.

7/30/07
1
My complaint isn't that we gave up a lot for Garnett. It's that we gave up MORE THAN WE HAVE TO. That's the ultimate deciding factor in ANY trade. And once again, Ainge has managed to NOT maximize the deal.

I think both CF and Pat have good points here, and there are a couple of ways to look at it.  Yes, the Celtics will be good this year (but I don't see it working out longer than that), and yes the Celtics being relevant again is GREAT for the NBA.  On the other side, the future of the Celtics actually looked pretty decent right until that Ray Allen trade.  Green is as talented as they come, and Al Jefferson was looking really good too.  A player like Jeff Green would've fit perfectly as a compliment to those two.  Now the future of the C's is gone.

The Celtics have been rebuilding for twenty years now. The youth movement was only going to delay them even longer form being a contender  for a title. I think this is a brilliant move even if they get rid of Jefferson. It has been a long time since I have WANTED to watch a Celtics game.

My main beef with the trade:

I don't see the Celtics being good enough to win a championship this year
After this year, Garnett is allowed to opt out of his contract.
Ray Allen is old as dirt, and just had surgery on both ankles.
In one year, this trade could quite possibly leave us WORSE off than we were before the draft, if that's even possible.
The only difference being, we DON'T have a #5 pick, Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, etc to wave in front of teams in order to get another "Fix" for the franchise.

I think it's VERY possible, even PROBABLE for the Celtics to end up STILL without another championship in 3-4 years, and have an even worse team, and I have no confidence whatsoever in Danny Ainge's abilities to right the ship again.

The Celtics (and every team) should be working towards a CHAMPIONSHIP, not just marketability. This makes the C's a much better team right now, but still not good enough. And it makes them a MUCH worse team down the road.

I've been following the celtics since the 80's ,however, the last time I saw the celtics play an entire game (from pre-game analysis to post-game interviews) was when they became the best playoff team to overhaul the largest recorded third quarter deficit  in a playoff series and win the game. Heck, I even can't remember the deficit and what the year was (Can somebody refresh me on this!). Although I vividly registered the image of a fierce Antoine Walker shouting words at his teammates during the third and fourth quarter break and saw a listening Paul Pierce respond with barrages of penetrations, outside sniping and hustle in the fourth to lead the green over Jason Kidd and the nets in the best come from behind NBA playoff game.  Although  I believe they lost the series.
With this trade, if consummated, they are back in the basketball map. Their games will be again be featured worldwide and most of all, they regularly will be leading the third, not trying to come from behind. Whether they will get 17th remains to be seen, although it is a fair possibility in the next three years. (That's the present. I hope Danny didn't forget the future and start replacing the pieces he just lost. The 2010 season will be similar to 2006 if He doesn't!)
This year's gonna be interesting for boston fans. From the looks of it, the redsox will finally break the yankees rule over the american east and still be playing in October. The celtics season looks it could last until June, 2008. Lest, don't forget the patriots. Got to fight late night urges to stay awake just watch games again!

Finally the Celtics are getting themselves back into playoff contention. With the addition of Ray Allen the Celtics already added around 25 more points per game, and now with the addition of KG! ARE YOU SERIOUS!!! Talk about an insane 1-2-3 punch. Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett are all points per game leaders in each league. Now I agree that Al Jefferson is going to be great in the future but right now he's averaging 9 points, 9 rebounds. Kevin Garnett is averaging 20+ points and 12+ rebounds he's a big addition to the can't ever win a game Celtics. Oh and how about him and my boy Glen Davis the Celtics finally have a team that can do it all. They can dunk, shoot the mid range and beyond the arc. The Celtics are going to be unstoppable this year if this deal pulls through.

Actually Al averages 16 and 10 but thats beside the point. C's have one of the best starting lineups but no one left on the bench.

Well i tried to make the point that for the next two years we're better off with KG then Al Jefferson.

I know this has nothing to do with the Garnett deal, which I think will be good for both sides if The Timberwolves can resign all those young guys except Bassy, but Skip Bayless said this morning that if LeBron won the Who's Now? that his head would explode on First Take. So people lets makes this happen. I'm posting this here since it is the most discussed topic of the week.

Lots of people missing the point with these posts.  If you have a chance to trade for a unanimous first ballot hall of famer, someone is one of the greatest 25 NBA players of all time, you take him.  Especially if you are in a weak conference, where last year the best team made it to the finals with one star and no better supporting cast.

If all you're gonna do is compare stats (like with the loss of Al Jefferson), you shouldn't be in this conversation.  Anyone who has actually seen watched either of these two play knows that the difference on defense is between someone who is learning it, and someone who is in the running for defensive player of the year EVERY YEAR.

Pierce, Allen and KG all care about winning more than they do about individual scoring.  The advantage of being later in their careers is that they know that it's now or never.  KG has brought it every night for his entire career (unlike say, LeBron, who consistently takes nights off), and is someone who Pierce will listen to, someone who will help make his game better.

Now if only we could convice McHale to take Doc Rivers off our hands....
