Kevin Millar Continues to Cowboy Up with Red Sox; Throws Out First Pitch and Introduces Lineup at Fenway

Maybe too much is being made of Kevin Millar openly cheering on the Boston Red Sox and taking part in each step of the run, but it would piss me off if I was an Orioles fan.

It's definitely pissing this blogger off:

Traitor.

The game's not over, but really I don't know how much I actually care who wins. Boston's up 3-2 going into the 7th.

Kevin Millar threw out the first pitch. Baltimore Oriole Kevin Millar went to Fenway Park to give the Red Sox mojo because he was a 2004 hero.

2632 noted that Bill Mueller did it last night. My response was, and is, that Bill Mueller is retired from active play. Millar is not. Millar is a member of a rival team of Boston's. Millar should not be out there hugging Doug Mirabelli in front of God and everybody.

A typical, disgusting display!

Normally things like this don't bother me, but what the hell is Kevin Millar doing out there rah-rahing a rival club? Are you kidding me? I hope he's fined for conduct unbecoming an Oriole or some such made up garbage. I understand Kevbo still has friends on the Sox, and he says nice things about us, and in a week I won't give a damn and I'll go back to liking Millar just fine, but this is really sticking in my craw for some reason. It's annoying, is what it is.

Have some pride in your current professional life, Kev. Stop living in the past. You are not a member of the Boston Red Sox. It's over, dude. You are an Oriole. I understand how this might be difficult to deal with, but these pipe dreams of yours aren't going to make your winter any shorter.

(P.S., Sharp designer jeans, though.)

How would you feel if one of your team's players were openly rooting on and taking part in a divisional rival's playoff run? Is this cool?

The White Sox had a case not quite so egregious, but it will show how fans can feel about these things. White Sox pitcher Mark Buerhle is from the St. Louis area and would openly comment that he loves the Cardinals and would love to pitch for them someday. Now, I consider myself fairly enlightened and rational when it comes to my sports fandom, but this drove me absolutely crazy. If you want to admit that you USED TO be a fan of a team, sure. I'm not delusional enough to think that ball players didn't have favorite teams when they were growing up. I hated Buerhle for this. I felt if he loved the Cards so much, let him go there now.

If I were an Oriole fan, I'd be livid.

I was going to use the White Sox as an example too :)

My feeling is, I think it would irritate most fans, to varying degrees.  Reason being, some fans, devote a lot of time and energy into their team.  I know I do.. and I'm not the only one.. All the research, fantasy, game watching, reading the blogs, and you honestly have no vested interest... just loyalty.  Whatever your reasons, your team is YOUR team.  You putting up with taunting, smack talking, crappy seasons (say, a 4-12 football season), and you stand by YOUR team.  So for someone who DOES have a vested interest, (i.e. getting a SALARY from that team) it seems disloyal to me.
I really think it comes down to the basic fundamental of loyalty.
And in this case, I feel that he could have these strong feelings for the Red Sox, and not be so freaking vocal about it.  I'm sure Brett Favre has a favorite football team, but god help him if I hear about it.
I think he's being tacky... and I'd be extremely irritated if I were an Oriole fan.  Hell, after typing this I'm irritated and I'm an A's fan.  haha.

I know it would bother me if a member of my team openly rooted like that for another team; thankfully, on the Twins, there aren't any(that I know of); plus, it's been 16 years since they won a World Series now!!

Oh, and screw that Red Sox blogger too. I'm sure you'd love one of your players blatantl cheering on a division rival.

I'm a Sox fan - and this was totally unacceptable.  It's an insult to the Orioles organization and I would get rid of him for this.  Enough already - it's not 2004 and it's one part embarrasing that he wants the Red Sox fans to love him so much (even though I do) and three parts just plain unacceptable to Baltimore fans.  They've had a rough recent history but a very proud past and a terrific stadium and fan base - I'd demand he was gone.  Anything less and it's insulting to the diehard Orioles fans. . . it would NOT be tolerated by the Red Sox or Yankees - today's elite - so why should it be tolerated by yesterday's elite franchise that has been trying its damndest to get back in the picture in a salary capless disaster scenario for the Jays and O's?

Again, I love the Sox - am going to game 1 of World Series - but this isn't acceptable behavior.  And as a baseball fan the glory of winning just isn't the same without an equal playing field, imho.

You all are aware that the Red Sox organization called and asked for permission from the Orioles BEFORE actually asking him to throw out the first pitch, and be at the game...right?

"According to Millar, the Red Sox first contacted Orioles president Andy MacPhail about the planned ceremony. Only after receiving permission did Red Sox President/CEO Larry Lucchino invite Millar over the phone."

If you have such a problem with that, then be more upset at Orioles management to allow it, and not Millar himself.

It sounds like to me that you guys are assuming that these athletes aren't allowed to be fans too. It's kind of ridiculous to "release Millar now", like your saying he's not going to try next season? Please. He is a member of the Orioles; they aren't playing...so what exactly are you expecting from him? To stay inside his home or in a gym getting ready for next season like all other baseball players are? No. Everybody else is relaxing how they know how to, and if he wants to cheer on his friends and old team, I don't see how big of a deal it is.

Yeah, I'm with you.  I'm not a die-hard O's fan, but I consider myself a fan.

This isn't something I want players of my team doing.   I think it would be different if he were cheerleading for the Marlins, but not a team in your own division.

Millar is like that creepy ex-girlfriend who wont leave you alone because she thinks that there was something special. I heard that analogy on the radio.

Eh, I don't think the analogy is altogether fitting. In this case, it would be like inviting the creepy ex-girlfriend to your wedding and asking her to do a reading. It isn't like Millar barged his way into the broadcast and started introducing the lineup!

Every time the Sox played the O's this year Millar did something to the visiting clubhouse. And if the Sox followed the O's on the road he would leave a prank behind for Francona (no boiled rabbit I'm sure). He does need to cut the ties with the franchise. And I am surprised that the owner of the O's allowed him to throw out the first pitch last night. He could of said no. Even during the season last year he had team mates that were not pleased with his strong feelings for the organization.

First off, who said I wasn't pissed at the organization as well? If they don't want to be seen as jokes, don't let this crap go on.

Here's the thing. If Millar wants to quietly root for his buds, that's fine. But to throw out the first pitch, hang in the dugout, and publicly root for a division rival of the team that employs him is wrong. It's blatantly telling the Orioles that he still wants to be a Red Sox. Implicitly, it says that the only reason Millar signed with the Orioles is because the Red Sox didn't want him anymore. The way I see it, if Millar is saying he doesn't want to be an Oriole, why should the Orioles want him anymore?

I think you hit the nail on the head right there.  Andy MacPhail said it was ok, which should automatically be a sign that it isn't.

When I saw this happen, I did not think it was cool.  When you are active in the league, you sit at home and you watch the game on television.  You don't root on a division rival who you just happened to play for during their curse breaking year at their stadium.

I was surprised that Major League Baseball let this happen.  There is a clear sign in the locker rooms across the league that there should not be fraternizing while in uniform.  It seems to me that even though Millar was just in his "sharp designer jeans", this is exactly the type of behavior that baseball is trying to discourage.

I would say there should be some kind of suspension, but I don't know what you could do to Boston other than fine them.
