Khedira and Modric confident about holding pivotal roles at Real Madrid
Sami Khedira has announced that he won’t be part of Real Madrid’s last minute exodus. The German midfielder’s Jorg Neubauer has also confirmed this news. The hustle and bustle of the transfer window has seen the departure of Mesut Ozil and Kaka, but Khedira claims he is determined to prove his mettle at Los Blancos.
The 26-year-old Germany international, who has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, insists he wants to stay at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. After Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao over the weekend, Neubauer revealed that Khedira was staying at Real Madrid for the season.
“Sami will stay at Real,” Neubauer told Die Welt. “Just like he has always said.”
Khedira has a standing contract with Real Madrid, which is set for expiration in the summer of 2015. The German center midfielder joined Real Madrid from Stuttgart soon after the 2010 World Cup in Africa ended. During his three-year stay at club Khedira has scored five goals and appeared in 128 games.
The arrival of a young crop of Real Madrid midfielders and a plethora of new signings hasn’t worried Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric. The Croatian center midfielder believes he will have a role in the first-team under manger Carlo Ancelotti. The 27-year-old also believes that Real Madrid’s record signing Gareth Bale will take time to adapt to the Spanish gameplay.
Modric told reporters that he believed he was starting to scratch the surface to reach his best form. The midfielder insists he has the capability to improve further this season.
“When you do not have pre-season it is very difficult to come into the team and find your rhythm,” Modric said. “You need rhythm and precision, you need that connection with your team-mates. This year it is much better because I have been able to begin from zero with the rest of my team-mates. I am very pleased with my performance. I will work to try to continue with this form and improve even more in the future.”
Xabi Alonso’s long-term absence due to injury from Real Madrid midfield means Modric will be given a free role in the center of the park. Modric has enjoyed being the pivot of Real Madrid’s midfield, something he has proven to be good at as well. Modric was named man of the match for his work against Bilbao last weekend.
“Today the fans have enjoyed themselves,” Modric said after the game. “It was our best game of the season. Each game we are playing better.”
