Jurgen KlinsmannApparently, US Soccer has a lot of faith in Jurgen Klinsmann.

And rightly so. After winning the Gold Cup in the midst of a CONCACAF record 13-game winning streak and upsets of #2 Germany and Bosnia-Herzegovina on the road, a draw at Azteca stadium, and a #13 FIFA ranking, a bad draw for the World Cup means his worth may not be fully realized this year. But USSF obviously favors him for Russia in 2018.

Of course, he can be justified if the USA simply advances in the Group of Death with either Germany, #5 Portugal, or Ghana. Against these nations, the USA is 1-3-0 in the last three World Cups, the three losses being the game in which the USA was eliminated. The win was over Portugal in 2002, when they were also ranked #5.

Klinsmann can prove himself in a group where we could have a repeat of 1998, when the USA lost three and went home, including a loss to Iran. But Ghana is anything but Iran in '98; had it not been for a deliberate handball, they would have advanced to the semifinals four years ago against Uruguay.

Klinsmann has proven himself to USSF. Now he has to convince the doubters.
