Klinsmann names preliminary 30 man roster ahead of the World Cup
Here is the 30 man roster in full detail:
GK: Brad Guzan, Tim Howard, Nick Rimando
DEF: DaMarcus Beasley, Matt Besler, John Brooks, Geoff Cameron, Timmy Chandler, Brad Evans, Omar Gonzalez, Clarence Goodson, Fabian Johnson, Michael Parkhurst, DeAndre Yedlin
MID: Kyle Beckerman, Alejandro Bedoya, Michael Bradley, Joe Corona, Brad Davis, Mix Diskerud, Maurice Edu, Julian Green, Jermaine Jones, Graham Zusi
FW: Jozy Altidore, Terrence Boyd, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Aron Johannsson, Chris Wondolowski
From first glance, I see that 2 notable players are missing, Brek Shea and Eddie Johnson. Shea is the player I'm more surprised with. Granted, these are two players who would never see the starting XI at all in Brazil, but two players who can have an impact off the bench. Starting with Eddie Johnson, he has the ability and speed to make plays, but his biggest asset is his height. He would be great to have on a corner kick situation, but other than that, there's not too much upside to have him ride the bench for that one feature.
Brek Shea has an ability to be a play-maker much like EJ, but he can also be a sub for Zusi or Donovan. He is an outside midfielder who can come in and get the ball into the box, not to mention he can score goals on occasion. I like him better than a Joe Corona or Alejandro Bedoya, but then again I'm not Jurgen Klinsmann.
As it stands right now, I could probably take a guess at who could be left behind and a possible starting XI in Brazil. Of the 30 included in the roster above, my final 23 would not include the following players:
John Brooks, DeAndre Yedlin, Timmy Chandler, Alejandro Bedoya, Joe Corona, Mix Diskerud, and Terrence Boyd.
Diskerud would be my last one out on the roster. He has a special element that he brings to every US game, but I bet Klinsmann will bring Julian Green to Brazil instead. The young blood from Bayern Munich has been hyped to be something special for the national team, and I can't see Klinsmann leaving him off the roster after all the time and effort it took Jurgen to convince Green to play for the United States, involving a change of association approval by FIFA. So with that in mind, here's my Starting XI that could very well be seen in Brazil.
Formation (4-4-2): Tim Howard/ Geoff Cameron, Matt Besler, Omar Gonzalez, Clarence Goodson/ Graham Zusi, Jermaine Jones, Michael Bradley, Landon Donovan/ Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore
This would probably be my blanket Starting XI to see in Brazil. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see Klinsmann start Beckerman instead of Jones for the match against Portugal. The reason behind that would be for Beckerman to cover Cristiano Ronaldo the entire 90. He brings tenacity and grit, however, he lacks speed. I can't envision one guy shutting him down completely, but he can stall him and frustrate him long enough to get help. Other than that, it looks like a solid XI.
Lastly, considering the USA are in the 'group of death', there's one scenario I can envision that would be a best case scenario to put the US through to the knockout round. They need to beat Ghana while Germany beats Portugal. Then the US would have to beat or draw Portugal and have Germany advance past Ghana. With one game to go, Germany would advance into the next round, not needing to win the last game, although they will want to be first in the group. USA draws Germany and regardless of the other match, USA advances. A very tricky scenario, but the USA can;'t afford to drop points in this group.
Be on the lookout for Klinsmann to name the Final 23 man roster he will take to Brazil. The deadline to submit the roster is June 2.
