The New York Knicks maintained their undefeated 4-0 record this season by clinching a victory over the Dallas Mavericks and improving on their best start in two decades, after a solid 7-0 start took the team to the 1994 Championship Finals.

Carmelo Anthony led the New York Knicks with 31 points, while J.R. Smith provided a spark of the bench contributing 22 points to Knicks’ 104-94 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.  Guard Jason Kidd also played 18 minutes in his first meeting with former team, the Dallas Mavericks, since signing a three-year deal with the New York Knicks this offseason. Former Dallas Mavericks big man Tyson Chandler scored 11 points and nine rebounds in the game.

However, after starting two back-to-back games the New York Knicks didn’t appear so affective defensively after they allowed 34 points in the second quarter. It was the first time the New York Knicks trailed beyond the first-quarter this season, as the momentum of the game kept changing down in the third quarter.

Forward Carmelo Anthony’s 10 points in the first quarter put the New York Knicks into a 25-23 lead. O.J. Mayo opened the scoring in the second quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers on a 16-5 run that led the Dallas Mavericks to 39-30. Vince Carter improved on that lead by adding seven points to the Dallas Mavericks’ 41-31 score. With 4:16 minutes remaining in the first half, the New York Knicks tried to make a comeback by tying the score at 44-44, but they were again trailing 57-55 by the half-time break.

The New York Knicks played more aggressively in the third-quarter, with J.R. Smith coming off the bench to lead them 84-78. J.R. Smith added nine points for the New York Knicks after Carmelo Anthony was benched with four fouls.  Carmelo Anthony later came back in the fourth quarter score nine points.

Tyson Chandler tipped the ball in to maintain the New York Knicks’ 90-82 lead with 8:13 remaining. But moments later, O.J. Mayo cut that lead to just lead to just four points with a layup on the 7:32 mark. The Dallas Mavericks only managed two more field goals after that as Tyson Chandler provided the New York Knicks’ first double-digits lead with a follow dunk on the 6:08 mark and free throw after being fouled.

Dahntay Jones scored two points on free throws with 3:25 remaining while over a minute down, the Dallas Mavericks rallied 8 points behind the New York Knicks with Chris Kaman’s contribution. Tyson Chandler scored one-of-two from the line on the New York Knicks’ next possession and Carmelo Anthony scored from the paint to lead his team 101-91 with 2:19 left in the game.

The New York Knicks put an end the Dallas Mavericks’ three-game winning with a streak 16-point lead in their face-off,  , marking the fourth consecutive game the Knicks won by double-digits this season.
