In rare footage, Stephen A. Smith is recorded off-air in his Dwight Howard interview, and mentions how James Dolan, the owner of the New York Knicks, almost traded Iman Shumpert. The reason? Shumpert didn’t want to play in Summer League and Dolan wasn’t pleased about that.
Smith says, “And by the way, Dolan was ready to trade Iman Shumpert because he didn’t want to work out in the summer league. Dolan’s talking about trading him. I said, ‘trade who? You better hold on to that boy. You better not lose Iman Shumpert.’ That boy can play.”
Smith obviously hears about tons of rumors and trades, that the public is not privy to. But if this story is indeed true, the emotional instability of James Dolan explains why the Knicks have signed players to such bad contracts and traded away such young talent.
