Kobe Wants Final Word With Dwight Howard
While Dwight Howard goes through the courting process from teams such as Houston, Golden State, and other teams with the salary cap to afford him, Kobe Bryant is keeping it cool for now. Bryant believes that his words will be more impactful if he talks to Dwight after the courting process than before the courting process.
"For me, you kind of let him do his due diligence and then move in and talk to him and figure out if this is a place he wants to be," Bryant said. "We all want him here. But then that's when the selling begins [after Howard is courted by other teams]. You don't start the selling process right before he goes and does all this stuff. You want to get the last word. You want to have the final word and the closing argument. I'll give him a little opening statement, but then I have to make sure I have the final word."
Even if Dwight Howard decides to leave the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe knows that the organization is far bigger than any one player. It wasn’t too long ago, that the Lakers traded away the most dominant center in the league – Shaquille O’Neal. Therefore, if Howard doesn’t come back, the Lakers will find another player to fill in the void.
And if you’re Dwight Howard, that should be seen as something attractive, not offensive. Once Kobe Bryant retires into the sunset, and he is finally the face of the franchise, Dwight Howard will be able to attract other free agents to Los Angeles, the way he was not able to do in Orlando.
