Kobe's trade demand may result in O'Neal coming to the Lakers
5/31/07

Jermaine O'Neal, of course.

This is according to Peter Vecsey, so take that into consideration.

Kobe Bryant's steady squawking over the last 96 hours about his cheerless existence as a Laker (since re-signing with the team in July of '04) to anybody flashing a media credential or offering a live mike thankfully appears to be almost over.

Within the last week, the Pacers and Lakers have laid the groundwork for a trade that would certainly placate both sorrowful All-Stars. L.A. inquired about O'Neal - another fake franchise player pocketing maximum money on the prowl for someone to save him from losing. And was told he was available. Indiana let it be known the Lakers have ample assets (players and/or picks) to make a fair deal. No specifics were delivered. No negotiating has been done. Still, Lamar Odom would have to be the principal of the package in order to adhere to NBA trade specifications. He's currently on the Laker salary cap for $12,348,596 and has two seasons remaining at 900G per raises.

We know Kobe is not getting traded. His backpedaling yesterday even made Carmelo Anthony proud. Might not have been the best way to go about it, but Bryant is going to eventually get what he wants. Help.

So let's pretend Peter Vecsey is right on this one. Is O'Neal the right answer for the Lakers? I've never been a fan of Jermaine. He doesn't seem to have the fire to win. Good player, definitely an improvement from Bynum, but can he compete with Duncan, Amare ... Oden even in the West?

Vescey is normally an idiot anyway, but he may be on to something here.  In a league without a whole bunch of really good centers in this era, the Lakers may be better off with Jermaine O'Neal.  He's got bulk and better skills now (something he lacked in Portland), and can hang with some of the good centers.  But the Lakers real problem is Kobe, and until he learns to help make the players around him better, he will languish in his own sorrow, and probably (again) ask to be traded.

1) Peter Vescey is a complete moron.

2) This trade would be so pointless.  There still wouldn't be any third scorer, or shooter, or anything.  This team needs a third guy that can do anything on offense.  Watching the Laker offense is so God damn painful to watch.  Two guys actually give a damn, move around, do every damn thing they can do, and 3 guys sit around and bitch about everything that goes wrong.

3) Kwame Brown (contract expires after this year), Vlad Radmonovich (they seem to have a thing for white shooters), Bynum, and the 19th pick for J. O'Neal is the only trade that would make the Lakers better, and actually allow the Pacers to start rebuilding.
