Koln star Lukas Podolski signs a gentlemanís agreement with Arsenal
According to reports Lukas Podolski has agreed to a gentleman’s agreement with the English club Arsenal. Yesterday rumors about the Podolski joining the Gunners were initiated after a club insider revealed that the German international was engaged with behind the curtain negotiations with a London club.
Since then media has been speculating about the arrival of Podolski into the English Premier League. Today, officials from London announced that the 26-year-old will join his countryman, Per Mertesacker at the Emirates.
The news was first revealed from the Germany by Bild. The transfer fee for the Koln striker has not been confirmed yet but his transfer to North London seems imminent now. Podolski’s contract with Koln expires in 2013.
Although the German international has repeatedly expressed love for his hometown club, he admits that he is frustrated by its lack of success in recent years. This is why Podolski turned down negotiations for a contract extension.
Koln FC is willing to double the wages of the former Bayern Munich player to €5 million per year. However, Podolski stands by his original pledge which was to wait and make a final decision after the Euro 2012.
Well, this gives both clubs Arsenal and Koln to prepare for Podolski’s arrival and exit. Moreover, the transfer window will open after Euro 2012.
Arsenal manager, Arsen Wenger has an admirer of Podolski for a long time. Now that Podolski has just a year left in his contract and is unwilling to sign an extension, Koln have little choice other than to sell their coveted striker.
Bundesliga outfit, Schalke is closely monitoring the Arsenal-Podolski situation. Reportedly, Schalke are willing to offer as much €6 million per year. Podolski has yet to comment on his agreement with Arsenal and the offer from Schalke.
Podolski has been in sublime form for Koln this season. So far he has scored 15 goals in 19 Bundesliga appearances. Podolski has also provided four assists.
