Kurt Rambis Shocked Mike D’Antoni Hired Him
The newest assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, Kurt Rambis, was absolutely shocked that Mike D’Antoni hired him to be on his staff, especially since Rambis was one of his harshest critics.
“Mike D’Antoni came to me several weeks ago and asked if I’d be interested in the job,” Rambis said, in an interview with Lakers Nation. “Quite frankly, I was a little bit shocked about that, and for him, he said it was a no-brainer, and I jumped on it right away. I said, ‘This would be great, I think it would work out well for both of us. We rekindled our friendship. We’ve known each other for several years going back in coaching circles. It was kind of an interesting conversation, I just had no idea that that’s the direction it was going to go.”
There are conspiracy theories that suggest that the Rambis hiring is a segue for the hiring of Phil Jackson. But this hiring was probably more for public relations purposes and to appease Laker fans more than anything else.
