LaDainian Tomlinson brought forth some unexpected news along with the announcement of his retirement. LaDainian Tomlinson, who was a first-round pick from the NFL Drafts in 2001, played in the league for 11 years.
LaDainian Tomlinson spent nine seasons with the San Diego Chargers before he moved to the New York Jets for the last two years of his running back career. However, LaDainian Tomlinson retired as a San Diego Charger after signing a one-day contract with the franchise.
The 33-year-old told San Diego Union-Tribune that the only team he would have liked to play for this season was the Denver Broncos. LaDainian Tomlinson admitted that his decision to play for the Denver Broncos was influenced by Peyton Manning’s addition to the squad.
“The only team I really gave a thought to was the Broncos, because of Peyton (Manning). We talked. Tom (Condon, Tomlinson's agent) talked with them ... It made me pause a little (and think), 'Was this what I really want to do?' ... I said, 'They got Peyton, they have a good defense already; they went deep in the playoffs with Tim Tebow, what are they going to do with Peyton?” LaDainian Tomlinson said in the interview.
Chargers fans are actually happy to LaDainian Tomlinson retire as a legend. Interestingly, Chargers fans also found it hard to see that their hero was playing for another team. LaDainian Tomlinson, who played for the San Diego Chargers from 2001 to 2009, has rushed for more than 12,000 yards for his former franchise.
When LaDainian Tomlinson join the New York Jets in 2010 it became clear that running back was eyeing a Super Bowl ring.
“If we would have won the Super Bowl after nine years, I would have retired a Charger. Then I wouldn't even have gone to New York,” LaDainian Tomlinson said.
LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for 914 yards during the regular season. However, it seems as if fate is not without a taste for irony. Any hopes the New York Jets had of entering the playoffs were eliminated after a defeat to Indianapolis Colts led by Peyton Manning.
LaDainian Tomlinson wants a Super Bowl ring on his finger and he wants to play with Peyton Manning at the Denver Broncos. However, LaDainian Tomlinson feels that pursuing these dreams just doesn’t bear the same meaning it used to.
“At the same time, I thought, 'How much is a Super Bowl ring really going to do for you at this point?' Because it's not with the team I really wanted to do it with,” LaDainian Tomlinson said.
