Lakers Inquiring About Iman Shumpert and Tyson Chandler
According to Chris Broussard of ESPN, the Los Angeles Lakers have reached out to the New York Knicks regarding their best perimeter defender, Iman Shumpert, and may reach out to Tyson Chandler as well.
“The Lakers recently called the Knicks to express their interest in Iman Shumpert, according to sources close to the situation. No trade is imminent, and sources say the Lakers’ call was more about doing their due diligence; it’s well-known Shumpert is available. The Lakers are unlikely to make a deal before the end of their current four-game trip, which concludes Tuesday night in Memphis. …Sources say the Lakers also are interested in another Knicks player — center Tyson Chandler. The Lakers did not inquire about Chandler when they called about Shumpert, but they are weighing whether to propose a Pau Gasol-for-Chandler trade, according to sources.”
Gasol has not been quiet about his discontentment recently with Mike D’Antoni’s offense and his lack of touches in the post. The Knicks, however, run a half court offense, where Pau could plant himself in the paint and ease the offensive load from Carmelo Anthony.
The trade could mutually benefit both teams, but it would change the dynamics of each team completely. The Lakers defense would dramatically increase with the presence of Shumpert and Chandler and the Knicks offense would get much better with the presence of Gasol in the paint. It’s still early in the season, but the trade deadline is only two months away and trades are going to happen to teams like the Lakers and Knicks that are expected to win now, not later.
