Was Brent Barry Fouled? Greg Popovich Didn't Think So
5/28/08

Los Angeles became the first team to beat San Antonio at home in the playoffs, and in doing so have taken a 3-1 series lead in the Western Conference Finals. The Lakers out played the Spurs for 47 minutes of the game, but the Spurs had a late surge with 56 seconds left to cut the 7 point Laker lead to 2. However, San Antonio couldn't get over the hump and take the lead, something they were never able to do the entire game.

Kobe Bryant had a great game, pouring in 28 points on 14-29 shooting and grabbing 10 rebounds. Lamar Odom had a relatively quite first three quarters, but had 8 huge points in the 4th quarter to finish with 16 points.

Tim Duncan continued to dominate on the boards, grabbing 17 of them, to go with his 29 points, while Tony Parker scored 23 points. Brent Barry added a career playoff high 23 points while hitting 5 three pointers.

But no one will be talking about that, and instead about what happened at the end of the game. The Spurs had cut the lead to 2 points with 2.1 seconds left. Robert Horry inbounded the ball to Brent Barry who gave an up fake and got his defender Derek Fisher in the air. Barry, however, took a dribble to the side as Fisher gave him a bump instead of throwing a three up with Fisher in the air and drawing the foul. So Barry takes his dribble to the right and throws up a prayer from 30-feet that hits the backboard next to the rim as the clock expired and the Lakers raised their hands in victory.

Was it a foul? Yes, I think that Fisher's bump was a foul, but with Barry shying away from the contact and dribbling to the side instead of going up with it when he had gotten his defender in the air, the refs made the correct no call. I'm also am not the only one who feels that way.

Greg Popovich, Manu Ginobili, Reggie Miller, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Kobe Bryant all said in their post game interviews and analysis that the correct non call was made. The TNT crew all agreed with Reggie, that since Barry didn't go up when he got his defender in the air, like most coaches tell you to do, and he shied away from the contact and tried to avoid Fisher, the refs made the correct no call.

So now the series shifts back to Los Angeles, where the Lakers haven't lost in the playoffs yet. The Spurs will have to try and regroup after this crushing home defeat to try and extend the series and bring it back to the San Antonio. I won't doubt the Spurs, since they're the defending champs, but it will be very difficult to recover from this game.

Los Angeles 93, San Antonio 91

Now it's your turn. Did Brent Barry get fouled? Did the ball actually hit the rim on the shot by the Lakers at the 5 second mark before bouncing off of Horry's leg and out of bounds? Did the Lakers out play the Spurs or did they just get lucky to steal one on the road?

Video Edits: Here is the final 2.1 seconds of the game.

Here is Phil Jackson discussing the non call and if Fishers shot hit the rim with 5 seconds left:

See here's my question. Even if it was a foul, it didn't seem worthy of a continuation. Fisher clearly came down on Barry, but Barry wasn't in the shooting motion. Barry had to square up again, and put both feet down before shooting. That isn't a continuation in my mind.

Since LA had four team fouls, all Barry would have gotten was two free throws for the bonus had a foul been called.
