Lampard beckons Mourinho to win silverware at Chelsea next season
Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard backed Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho to return to Stamford Bridge this summer. The veteran believes Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Chelsea will help the club and the Portuguese acquire a plethora of new trophies and titles.
Frank Lampard, who enjoyed great success under Jose Mourinho’s spell with the London outfit, finally signed a one-year extension contract on Thursday. The 34-year-old England international contract was set to expire this summer and Chelsea were uninterested in giving him a new contract, even though Frank Lampard has been the face of the club for than a decade.
Nonetheless, Frank Lampard proved his worth to Chelsea by recording superb form this season. The former West Ham United midfielder has scored 17 goals and provided six assists so far this season. Moreover, Frank Lampard has been the cornerstone to Chelsea’s survival in the top-four on the Premier League table.
Fresh from the glory of Europa League, Frank Lampard admits he is hungry for more silverware. Frank Lampard claims Jose Mourinho is the hot-favorite candidate to take over from the interim manager Rafael Benitez this summer.
“Jose's the greatest manager in our history and he changed the whole belief of the club and made us into a winning club,” Frank Lampard said. “It will lift the fans and it will lift the players. Those who haven't worked with him before will understand that he'll give them an extra edge.
“Our Premier League consistency has not been good enough in this last two years. We have to address that. We need to get back to that battering ram, winning mentality we had before. It's a bit like a magic recipe that's hard to explain. It's a lot of mental work. You have to be able to go out even when not at your best and grind out results.”
Meanwhile, Rafael Benitez has revealed that Chelsea have plans of emptying a treasure chest on buying new players this summer. Frank Lampard explained that bringing in new faces will be vital to Chelsea’s bid to win the Premier League title next season.
“We can do better,” Frank Lampard said. “Manchester United and Manchester City have raised the bar but we are all in a different situation this year. It will be difficult [for United]. Who wants to follow Alex Ferguson? We want to jump above United. It's going to be a huge change for them and whether they can adapt remains to be seen. I believe we have the strength to do it.
“There's a happy medium somewhere and we must certainly get back to being a bit more dogged. It doesn't mean taking away the beautiful football but you have to have a balance. It's a huge priority to be challenging for the league again next season.”
