There are times when I sit around and wonder, why does the world hate America so much? And then something like this pops up and I instantly understand why.Even though there were only about 26 people at last night's Reds/Marlins game where Griffey belted number 600, we already have a potential lawsuit on our hands about who caught the ball.
The man who came up with the ball after the scramble for it is only being identified as Joe. And, you'll love this, he was wearing a giveaway Sergio Mitre jersey (who?). He must be one of five real Marlins fans.
However, 25-year-old Justin Kimball, who lives in Miami, said he initially caught the ball, held on to it for at least two seconds and then had it snatched from his hands by Joe before he could drop to the floor and cradle it. And he has video evidence to prove it!
"It corroborates it on video evidence that I caught the ball, and I have a bunch of people here saying I caught the ball," said Kimball, pointing to scratches on his leg and arm. "I reached, I caught it, I brought it back and the guy just ripped it out of my hands."In addition to that, Kimball's lawyer made it to the game who said Kimball caught the ball first. Kimball hasn't sued yet, but we all know he will.
I can't tell what I find more hilarious, that Kimball's lawyer actually managed to get to the game to state that his client caught the ball first, or that a 25-year-old kid has a lawyer. Go America!
In case you were wondering, there were at least three instances when Bonds' home run balls wound up in lawsuits. His 73rd home run, his 600th home run, and his 700 home run. And of course the home run that broke Hank Aaron's record nearly got someone killed.
I don't what all of this says about our society, but whatever it is, it isn't good. But at least it's good for a laugh for two.
