Learning To Fly

2/21/14 in NBA   |   pigskinfan   |   44 respect

It can be fun to watch young teams develop.  It can also be a little frustrating too.  The 'Cats were able to get there last night, but it was a lot harder for them than it probably should have been.  I've been watching several teams that are in the same developmental spot that Charlotte is in very closely this season, and there's a lot to talk about, but it's a busy Saturday.  So, I guess I'm going to have to deal with that in a future post when there is more time.  Right now, we have to put our collective noses to the grindstone.

THE NBA  (6-4 ATS/7-2 SU/7-3 TOTALS last night and 17-16/19-13/17-16 so far for the week)

BUTTA  (1-0 last night and 3-0 so far for the week)
At this point in the proceedings, I've got nothing to share, but I am reserving the right to change that later this evening as we see how the day progresses.  You'll find more information on that in the notes below.

ALL THE REST
Grizzlies (-2, U179 1/2) 77 Pelicans (+6, U196) 87
BOBCATS 85 WIZARDS 91

Knicks (+3, O201 1/2) 103 Mavs 106
HAWKS   99 PISTONS (+3, O215) 111

Pacers 98 Wolves 100
BUCKS (+11 1/2, O189 1/2) 95 JAZZ (+4 1/2, O198) 108

Celtics   99 Nets 86
KINGS (-4, O196) 104 WARRIORS (-5, U201 1/2) 96

NOTES:
---You can see that I'm going against my numbers with the Griz.  Memphis is a team that's used to winning games, and they're used to winning the grinders.  The 'Cats just barely survived one of those grinders last night, so even though they're on a good roll right now, I don't think Charlotte can succeed against a team like the Griz in a 2nd game in a row.
---I haven't decided yet, but the Kings look like they might be a play tonight.  The Celts completely melted down in the 4th quarter last night against the Lakers, and that could have a huge impact on their performance in this b2b.  I'll wait and see how things go with my college hoops plays this afternoon.

COLLEGE HOOPS  (40-38 ATS/46-29 SU/34-44 TOTALS so far for the week)

BUTTA  (2-1 so far for the week)
1.  Louisville (-175) over CINCINNATI - I happen to think that The Ville is a much better team than Cincy, and I also think that laying (-4) with them would be relatively safe.  Why be "relatively safe" though when I can earn with what I think is a sure win for the Cardinals?
2.  PARLAY:  Marquette (-320) over DePAUL and Middle Tennessee St. (-320) over MARSHALL - Marquette is not the powerhouse that they have been in recent years, but DePaul is the same old story.  Because of a few weaknesses in the Warriors, I won't lay (-7) with them on the road, but they will win this game.  With MTSU, they're rounding into tournament form nicely of late.  Marshall doesn't have much to fight with against the Blue Raiders, but once again, laying (-7) on the road in a conference game isn't necessary when we can put one team with another to just win their games and get a (-138) payout.
3.  Baylor/W. VIRGINIA (O145) - Both these teams can really fill it up, and W. Virginia is an offensive beast at home.  I think this one flies over the posted number relatively early in the 2nd half.

NOTES:
---One of the things I watch at this time of year is teams that are playing their final home game of the season.  The way kids jump to the pros these days, it's hard to pile up a lot of seniors on a roster, but Senior Days/Nights have been a good angle in past years.  Last week, we had Senior Days for Gonzaga and Portland out of the WCC, and both won and covered easily.  Today there are 4 teams playing their final regular season home game for this season.  They are:  BYU, San Francisco, Santa Clara and Colorado.  Just food for thought.
---In my NBA notes, I noted that I just might have some interest in the Kings tonight.  Depending on what happens this afternoon, if I decide to not go that way, I might turn and look hard at New Mexico at home against San Diego St.  The Lobos are about as good a team as there is when it comes to fundamentals, effort, chemistry and, of course, talent.  That's what it takes to beat the Aztecs, and I think New Mexico gets it done tonight.

Saturdays can be difficult.  I know there's a lot of information to process, but I think the key is setting aside those games that create no interest and not looking twice at them once I've discarded them.  It's just something that makes things a little easier.  Have a great day.  Be careful out there, and I'll see you tomorrow.
