All hail Lionel Messi, the Argentinean prodigy who continues to dominate world football. Even as a Real Madrid supporter I am forced to admit the talents of the youthful master, Messi.

A report released on Tuesday by France Football Magazine revealed that Lionel Messi is the world’s highest paid footballer. Well, Messi has justified such claims by equaling Barcelona’s all-time scoring record.

The Catalan legend, Cesar Rodriguez and his 232-goal record for Barcelona stood strong for nearly six decades but today Messi equalized that record. The record became an inspiration for many future players but none of them were able to thwart Rodriguez’s record.

But that was before Messi had arrived at Camp Nou. Ever since Messi became a goal-scoring machine everyone was in wait for the day when the La Liga giants would celebrate Messi as their greatest striker of all time.

Messi struck the fabled target set by Rodriguez in today’s match against Granada. The league match (which began at 2000 GMT) saw Messi score the second for goal for Barcelona in the night, which happened to be Messi’s 232nd for Barcelona in all competitions.

Cesar was believed to have scored 235 goals in his 16-year long career for Barcelona. The Spaniard, who later managed Barcelona, died on the March 1, 1995.

This week Barcelona released a statement on their website which corrected the number of goals scored Rodriguez. The statement read:

“A study has revealed that the legendary Cesar Rodriguez in fact scored 232 goals, or just one more than the Argentinean, who could equal or beat that score against Granada.”

Cesar, who played for Barcelona from 1939 to 1955, also played for Spain. He scored 6 goals in 12 appearances for La Furia Roja. Rodriguez made his 232-goal record for Barcelona in 351 games.

On the other hand, Messi has equaled his tally in just 314 appearances. The 24-year-old World Player of the Year has now 52 goals for Barcelona in all competitions this season. Messi is once again the favorite to become World Player of the Year.

Messi scored the goal in the 17th minute of the game against Granada at Nou Camp. Messi the ball in after is struck the post following a deflected cross from Isaac Cuenca.

He might become the top goal scorer in Barcelona and in the league this season but if he doesn't grab some silverware Ronaldo will probably win the FIFA Balon d'Or
