Lions 37, Bears 27: Can Rex Grossman Play Defense?

Fortunately, due to the Cubs playoff clinching on Friday night I've been numbed to the mistakes of my other teams over the weekend.

Thus a record breaking 4th quarter offensive performance by the Detroit Lions against what used to be a good defense isn't fazing me.

Total lie! I tried to convince myself, but it's not working. This is awful. What on earth happened today?

The Detroit Lions broke an NFL record with 34 points in the 4th quarter and none of those can be attributed to Rex Grossman. Jon Kitna threw 2 touchdown passes, Kevin Smith intercepted a Brian Griese pass for TD, Kevin Jones rushed for a score and then to cap it all off Casey FitzSimmons took a last ditch onside kick to the house. Lions 3-1, Bears 1-3.

For Detroit, all is well. Jon Kitna is living up to his preseason "nonsense." 10 wins still seems high, but above all else, the Lions are NFC North contenders. For Chicago, it's going to be an ugly week. Who starts at QB? Who's healthy on defense? I hate the idea of switching QB's again since Brian Griese hasn't played in two years, but let's give Kyle Orton his shot before going back to Rex as a last ditch effort. What do you think?

Worst of all, Roy Williams comments this week proved to be right. "I don't see what the big deal is with Chicago." You and me both, Roy.

The scapegoat is gone Bears fans, now you finally have to see flaws outside of the QB position.

the QB position is still a big problem, agree?

Whats more surprising - that the Brewers and Cubs were fighting for the NL Central or that the Packers and Lions look to be the two contenders for the NFC North?

Yeah, but the offense as a whole has a lot of problems.  The running game is non-existant, and the blocking hasn't been great.  Not many QB's could be successful the way that offense is.  They put Griese in to cut down on turnovers...and he threw 3 picks.  Grossman can at least make more good throws than Griese.

Defensively, the whole team got hurt, that never helps.

Let me get this right, Griese attempted 52 passes? Even Favre didn't throw that many times and the Packers have no running game at all. Now I didn't watch the game, but the Bears were up 13-3 in the third. How many passes did he throw in the forth quarter when it became a shoot out? 52, my god.

Like you I didn't see the game, but I think the way the Bears call their offense is horrible.  Coaching is a part of this mess.  Even though I didn't expect it, I think you could've seen this coming way back in the off-season.  They just had a bad off-season and its seem to run right into the season.

In the NFL just about any team can game plan to take away one aspect of the opposing teams offense. Teams know the Bears can't pass the football well so they are eliminating the run game. Only great teams can still run over teams when they are aligned to stop it. The Bears are not one of those.

It goes together, if the Bears could get a passing game going (which Rex didn't do either) they'd have more success on the ground.

You have to go with Griese another week. The man hasn't played in two year. Of course hes going to make some stupid throws while shaking off the rust and readjusting to game speed. For that matter one of the pics Berrian should have caught, scored, and iced the game on. Give Brian another week if he doesn't show improvement Bears are in for a long season.

Even if the Bears HAD a good passing game, I'm not sure it'd be that tough to stop Cedric Benson and that run game.
