Lions S Amari Spievey arrested in domestic dispute
The Police responded to the Dove Lane home where to the Dove Lane home lives with his girlfriend, 26-year-old Lisa Marie Santos, at around 4:00 pm Tuesday after the couple got into an dispute over child support. Amari Spievey was arrested and charged with Class C felony third-degree assault, Class A misdemeanor risk of injury to a child and Class C misdemeanor disorderly conduct. His girlfriend was arrested and charged with risk of injury to a child and disorderly conduct for involvement in the dispute.
According to the police report, the couple was talking in their apparent while Amari Spievey held their 2-year-old daughter telling her "not to be crazy like her mother," when Lisa Marie Santos demanded payment of bills he owed her. Amari Spievey allegedly put his finger in her face and told Lisa Marie Santos to take him to court when the pushing ensued and Santos fell back against the counter.
The 24-year-old Amari Spievey said that Lisa Marie Santos grabbed his throat at least three times and threw a ‘flurry of punches at his chest” while he was holding their daughter. However, Amari Spievey did not have any visible signs of injury following the scuffle, according to the police report.
The police also noticed that Lisa Marie Santos had a small red mark on her neck. Lisa Marie Santos told the police that Amari Spievey put his hands around her neck and puched her back during the dispute.
Amari Spievey told the police that he did not hurt or punch his girlfriend and she tried to take the child away while he was holding her. Amari Spievey added he already pays her $3,000 in child support monthly and would pay anything to provide for his daughter’s needs, but he will not pay for Lisa Marie Santos to "go shopping and pay off her student loans.”
Both Amari Spievey and his girlfriend were released on $5,000 bond. They appeared in Middletown Superior Court on Wednesday where a judge issued protective orders against both.
Amari Spievey was issued a residential protective order, instructing him to move out of the couple’s residence immediately. However, Amari Spievey briefly returned under police supervision to retrieve his belongings. Meanwhile, Lisa Marie Santos received a partial protective order, allowing her to remain in the residence.
They are now due to appear in front of the family relations department of the court again on April 11.
A third round draft pick by the Detroit Lions in 2010, Amari Spievey played in 30 of 32 of the team’s games in his first two seasons, including leading the team fourth in tackles (70) during 2011. However, last year Amari Spievey only appeared in five games (with 2 starts) for the Detroit Lions while battling concussion symptoms and ending the season on the injured reserve.
Amari Spievey amassed 142 tackles and has intercepted five passes in three seasons with the Detroit Lions. He re-signed as a restricted free agent on a one-year, $630,000 contract with the Detroit Lions earlier this month.
