Liverpool sign in Daniel Sturridge for £12 million from Chelsea
Liverpool have signed in Daniel Sturridge for £12 million from Chelsea after weeks of speculation regarding the young rebel’s future. The 23-year-old England international was linked to a number of Premier League clubs before Liverpool finally won the race for his services.
Daniel Sturridge had become out of favor at Chelsea, which forced him to hand in his transfer window. Unfortunately, the young striker took this step after the summers, which is why Chelsea had to wait till the winter transfer to offload him.
The Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers was keen on bolstering his attacking options this fall. Liverpool has been suffering from lack of strikers since the beginning of the season. Brendan Rodgers has had only Luis Suarez at his disposal since October after summer signing Fabio Borini got sidelined with long-term foot injury.
Earlier today Liverpool officials finally gave the green light for celebrations after Chelsea finalized the transfer papers for Daniel Sturridge, who has been an object of great interest for the Reds for the past many weeks.
Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Daniel Sturridge declared he was looking forward to a long and successful career at the Merseyside club.
“I am humbled and happy to be here,” Daniel Sturridge said. “Brendan Rodgers said he sees me here for a long time - and I also see myself here for a long time. I’ve not signed here to play for a couple of years and then move on.
“I’ve signed to be here for as long as possible. It’s a humongous club – for me, one of the biggest in the world – and to have the fans and world-class players we have here is amazing.”
Daniel Sturridge was seen on the sidelines in Liverpool’s formal attire during the mid-week Premier League match against Sunderland. Liverpool picked up a convincing 3-0 victory over Sunderland with Luis Suarez scoring another brace.
Daniel Sturridge is expected to become Luis Suarez’s new partner in Liverpool’s attack. At Chelsea, Daniel Sturridge mostly came off the bench. This is also why the forward has scored only 15 goals in 55 appearances during his Chelsea career.
