Maybe we've finally reached the tipping point where businesses stop overspending just to sponsor ball parks big and small. A ball park in downtown Palmerton, Pennsylvania is in danger of succumbing to chain businesses without necessary funding, so the local school district offered the youth field up for sale. They received just one bid.
$5 from philanthropist Andrew Sabo, a kindergartner a Towamensing Elementary School. Awesome.
"The modest proposal was scrawled in pencil on an unlined piece of white paper. It was signed Andrew Sabo, who is a kindergartner at Towamensing Elementary School.Unfortunately, Andrew's generous offer will likely be denied and a Rite-Aid pharmacy will take up residence where his flag football ran wild.
Andrew's offer also came with a picture of the 5-year-old and his teammates on the Palmerton youth flag football team. The team, which was undefeated last year in the Lehigh Valley Youth Football League, plays on the field that was for sale.
Andrew was not at the district's administration offices Monday afternoon to see his bid opened. But reached at his home later, Andrew said he made his offer ''because they were selling the field,'' and that his dad, Dave Sabo, gave him the $5 to make his offer."
I don't think his dreams of owning a ballpark should go to waste. While he plans to spend his 5 bucks on candy, I encourage him to save the ball park in my neighborhood with ivy walls. The Tribune Company isn't all that greedy after all. Five dollars should do.
