Looking Back: Landon Donovan's World Cup Goal

Three Years Ago Today: Landon Donovan Puts USA in World Cup 2nd Round

Incredibly it's already been three years since arguably the biggest goal in United States soccer history. Three years ago today the US was playing in final group match at the 2010 World Cup against Algeria. The US needed a win to advance, but going into stoppage time in the second half, the score remained 0-0 and things looked bleak. That is, until a save by Tim Howard turned into a frantic run up the field that resulted in a miracle.

Three years later, and things are different for the US Men's National Team. There's a new coach in Jurgen Klinsmann. Donovan took a break from soccer, and while he's back in MLS, has yet to return to the national team. Clint Dempsey has become the national team's best player, while Jozy Altidore's goal streak indicates he may be ready to become the team's go-to scorer. Overall, things mostly look good for Team USA, as they sit atop the CONCACAF qualifying group and are in good shape to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Today though, we remember one of the best moments in American soccer history.

I can't believe this was 3 years ago. One of the more memorable days. Game started at like 7 am PT. Went to a bar to watch before work. Unbelievable energy. Unfortunately, the 3-year anniversary means one week from now is the 3-week anniversary of the Ghana loss...

Me either. I skipped work that day and went to bar for the game. It wasn't normally soccer friendly, but I didn't want to deal with the crazy packed soccer bars. The bar was ready with Bloody Mary specials, and you can guess how nuts it got at the end. I remember afterward the fifth set of the infamous Isner-Mahut match was on. I got home and it was still going on. An amazing day.
