Mandatory Credit: Spruce Derden-US PRESSWIREYesterday, the Los Angeles Clippers announced that they would picking up Coach Vinny Del Negro's third year of his contract after a tenuous season. It was tenuous in that Del Negro received a ton of criticsm when the team lost three games in a row, with some calling for his head.

But then Del Negro coached the team through the first round of the playoffs, coming back from a 27-point deficit. Del Negro has done more for this team, in terms of coaching, than has been done in over three decades. Granted, he's had a pretty good cast to work with this season.

What is curious about this decision is that the Clippers only picked up the option, not extending the contract. It seems if the Clippers were unsure about Del Negro that there are a ton of elite coaches out there looking for a job. Stan Van Gundy being at the top of that list.

So, it seems as though this is just another very "Sterling" move by the team. Rather than show real confidence in their coach, they show conditional trust. It feels like when the Knicks were toying with firing Coach Mike Woodson if he didn't get the team our of the first round. He didn't, and he still has a job, but he literally turned the team around. There was no way he shouldn't be trusted with leading that team.

Hopefully Del Negro will do an excellent job this year and lead the Clippers even further into the playoffs.
