It's becoming all too clear that Pau Gasol does not fit into the Los Angeles Lakers D'Antoni offensive system, and the organization is trying to figure out what to do about it.
It's being reported by Lakers Nation that a source close with management has confirmed there is a “legitimate” interest in Ryan Anderson of the New Orleans Hornets. The source said:
“The interest is coming from the Lakers, not New Orleans. Mitch (Kupchak) would prefer to keep Pau, as would Kobe. Jim (Buss) would prefer to continue cleaning house, and bring in players able to fit a more fast-paced style of play. Kupchak was clear about these facts 1.) No deal was imminent. 2.) Any proposed deal for Anderson would likely require a third team. 3.) Naturally, Gasol was generating a lot of interest from around the league, but reinforced that nothing was imminent.”
It isn't that Pau has lost his touch, he's just lost completely in this system. He fares best as the big man on the court, not at the four. However, if he can work harder and find his place, we have seen flashes of the magic that worked with him and Steve Nash on the floor together.
If Pau doesn't go to New Orleans, there are plenty of players that could be traded, but that still doesn't solve the problem of Pau not finding his place in this system.
The good and bad news is that this isn't imminent, so Pau can continue to grow and hopefully fall into line, but that's also bad since history has shown how adversely trade rumors affect him.
