Los Angeles Lakers Need Deron Williams
However, Sessions proved to be incapable of demanding the ball at the point guard position as Kobe would continue to create isolation sets while his teammates would sit and watch. This strategy might have worked two years prior when Kobe had just reached 30 years old, however, now that he will be turning 34 in August, the Lakers need to go in a different direction if they feel he can lead the Lakers to another title.
Deron Williams, almost the forgotten superstar point guard in the league as he has been stuck in New Jersey for a season and a half, is the answer for the Lakers. They tried to trade for Chris Paul last season in order to provide Kobe with a legitimate backcourt mate, however, we all know what happened there. Williams is a superstar guard who can dominate the ball and create for Kobe as well as a big man (depending on who they can keep after going after Williams). Point guard play is crucial to success in a Western Conference that features some of the best at that position in the league: Paul, Tony Parker, Russell Westbrook to name a few.
Kobe is clearly not the threat he once was, however he also has a lot left in the tank. Bynum only plays hard 50% of the time and Pau Gasol cannot handle the selfishness of Kobe's game any longer as he truly requires a passing two guard so he can be effective on the block. The Lakers tried to overpower their opponents with their strength on the inside, however, when things weren't going as planned, Kobe would attempt to take over and that began the Lakers demise.
Deron Williams in the purple and gold would allow for Kobe's career to be extended because of the diminished time spent dominating the ball. The Lakers want and need to compete for a championship. It's just what defines the Laker name. Deron Williams is the answer.
