It wasn't too long ago the Louisville possessed an offense that was easily confused with video game juggernauts. It wasn't even that long ago when we seriously discussed the Cardinals as a viable BCS National Championship contender. After what we witnessed yesterday afternoon, the question everyone is asking is, what happened?
UL compiled just 205 yards total offense against a Kentucky defense that is nothing compared to others in the SEC. Hunter Cantwell, whom the Cardinals faithful had high expectations, was terrible. His lengthy delivery was a step too late on numerous passes, three of which arrived in the arms of Wildcats defenders. Cantwell finished 20-of-43, for just 152 yards passing. That was good enough to create zero points for the Cardinals offense.
In 2006, the last year under Bobby Petrino, Louisville averaged 440 yards per game and averaged 36 points. That year they rolled up 59 points on Kentucky in this annual rivalry game to kickoff the season.
Steve Kragthorpe came over from Tulsa last season where his high scoring, high octane offense meshed well with Brian Brohm and the talent base that was supposed to be Top 10 all season. Brohm and Co. still tallied 488 yards per game of total offense, but defense was their Achilles heel.
Gone is Brian Brohm, and apparently any and all speed on offense. Even Kentucky was surprised how bad they were.
"They don't have the speed they used to have. There's no Harry Douglas at receiver who stretches the field because he's the fastest guy out there. There's no Michael Bush who can run you over or run away from you. Louisville used to be a team with a lot of speed. They don't have that anymore."
Those were the words of Wildcats senior linebacker Braxton Kelley.
I'd be willing to place the onus quickly on Cantwell, but I've watched him before in spelling Brohm and he was extremely effective. Kragthorpe, once touted as a program builder, has 11 games to keep his job at Louisville where he's quickly turning one of the up-and-coming football powers into a Big East football laughing stock.
