MLB 2008 Playoffs: White Sox Beat The Tigers 8-2 To Force 1-Game Playoff Against The Twins For The AL Central
The White Sox And Twins Are Just Taking It One Game At A Time
The White Sox won another must-win game, beating the Tigers 8-2 in their season finale. This forces a 1-game playoff with the Minnesota Twins for the AL Central title, and a chance to get beaten by play the Tampa Bay Rays in the first round of the playoffs.

Alexei Ramirez was the key player in this game, with a 2 hits (including a grand slam), 4 RBI,  2 runs scored, and a stolen base.

Gavin Floyd was solid on the mound for the White Sox, allowing only 2 runs on 5 hits in 6 innings, while striking out 8 to pick up the win.

The Tigers' pitchers only allowed 6 hits, but walks proved costly, as 5 of the 8 runs were scored by players who had reached base on a walk.

Next up for the White Sox is a one-game playoff with the Twins. The Sox will send 23-year old John Danks to the mound on 3 days rest, against the Twins' Nick Blackburn. Danks is 11-9 with a 3.47 ERA, and Blackburn is 11-10 and 4.14.

Due to the extra day of rest they had while the White Sox played the Tigers, the Twins' bullpen should be a bit fresher than the White Sox.

The Twins and White Sox have very similar teams. After finishing the season with identical records, playing almost the same exact schedule, the Twins finished 4th in runs scored and 13th in team ERA, while the White Sox finished 7th and 12th, respectively. The Twins won the regular season series 10-8, but the Whit Sox outscored them 100-99 in those 18 games. It's anyone's guess who will win this game and go on to face the Rays, but my money is on the Twins.

Any predictions? Let's hear them.

Twins win the season series, but home-field is determined by a coin flip that was done about a month ago.

I'm not that confident with Blackburn's rough September in Chicago, but there's no way I can go against my team in a playoff. If the Twins win this one there has to be some sort of offensive production by Justin Morneau. He had one total hit in the last 3-game series against the Sox at the Dome, and a continued struggle when he played against the Royals to end the season. If he is that supposed MVP candidate; he needs to prove something and get his team to the ALDS against the Rays.

As far as pitching goes; they have to do what they did in Minnie. Keep the 3-4-5 hitters cold, who had a combined 2 hits last week, and keep them in the ballpark. Chicago had a total of 3 Homeruns in the Dome last week, two by Griffey and one by Orlando Cabrera. And as the White Sox have proved all year long, if they can't hit the ball deep, they aren't going to score any runs -- it wont matter how good Danks is.

Twins win 5-4.

Of course, I think my team is going to win.  I think the game will be low scoring as Danks has the second most games with less than two runs given up in the AL (Cliff Lee is first) and Blackburn is a quality pitcher.  I think the game will be decided by a late inning home run. I think (and hope) the Sox bullpen will hold up.  Sox 3 Twins 2.
