MLB Trade Deadline Open-Thread: Steve Phillips and His Bad Advice
READ MORE:
MLB
It appears as though the biggest trade has already been executed. Afterall, Steve Phillips says he'd trade Ken Griffey Jr. if he ran the Cincinnati Reds.

I've begun to realize that the reason I love the trade deadline more in recent years. Phillips provides the definitive answer on all transactions: Listen to his opinion, and then go with the complete opposite as a prediction. It's also fun to be reminded of the Mets told him to go his own way and why he'll never see another personnel job in baseball.

Anyways, enjoy Phillips nonsense and feel free to discuss any and all trades, rumors, almost trades, and non trades right here.

CF, who do you think will not be in a Cubbies uni by the end of the day.  And who do you hope will be new to the cubs?

Looks like Joel Pineiro is a Cardinal.

Pipe Dream Wishlist: Jermaine Dye, Jon Garland, or Ken Griffy Jr.

Since none of those will happen, I'm just hoping for some bullpen help. I'm fearful the Cubs are once again relying on Kerry Wood to comeback. I think Matt Murton and Ronny Cedeno will likely be involved in a trade for a decent reliever. Not sure what I think about Greinke, but it sounds like that's someone Jim Hendry is after.

I forgot to add "Ryan Bourn" to the wish list. That guy's awesome.

Lol, I hope the Phils Get Marte from the Pirates.  We need a strong lefty.  I think we have to get rid of one OF, and I hope its Rowand.  He's a great player, but no way he'll be back next year.  We won't shell out the cash, and he's going to the team who offers the most.  Plus having a Bourn/Victorino/Rollins/Howard Top 4 is an awesome combo in my opinion.

I don't have a link to provide as I just heard on the radio, but it sounds like the Cubs have jumped into the Gagne stakes as the Brewers jumped in as well. Hendry can't let them take another good reliever.

But we could certainly use another good one.

Betemit to Yankees, Proctor to Dodgers

Yeah, that's exactly what the Yankees needed, a guy hitting .231. He's hitting .320 as a pinch hitter, but losing Proctor leaves a lot of bullpen innings to cover. Gagne perhaps?

Cubs might just be driving up the price on Milwaukee. Turnbow, Linebrink, Gagne and Cordero would make me incredibly nervous.

Hey as a Mets fan Steve Phillips was a good GM its not his fault if he aquires all star calibur talent and they cant perform in NY in 2001 he Roberto Alomar Jeremy Burnitz Roger Cendeno and Mo Vaungh 4 players which were doing good before they came to New York so he gets a bad rap for the players that didnt perform like they should have

I agree.  The only problem is our starting pitching has been so bad right now that our 'pen is worn out.  If we can get some quality starts going that would be a great bullpen.

Gagne to Red Sox

They still have a shot at the wild card. I wish they were done but not yet.

If I remember right wasn't Gagne the one that said that he didn't want to be a setup man? I guess for the right team, he'll play wherever they want him. I was still hoping that the Tigers would pursue Gagne harder than they did.

I was just reading that.  This day is starting to look good.

I heard the Braves are still pushing for Arroyo, but haven't heard anything new in a couple of hours.

Cubs are talking to the White Sox about Dye. Not sure what they'd offer ... but I'd be ecstatic if something were completed that didn't involve Pie.

Do they have any prospects left? They're really going win now aren't they?

They have a few.  They are really loaded at SS and catcher, even though the catching spot is a little diluted now.  The Braves now have a first baseman in Thorman that they can trade away.  Thorman with a prospect or 2 could get Arroyo if the Reds are really willing to get rid of Dunn this year or next.

The Braves have been talking about trading Renteria for the right pitcher for a few days now.  I hope that is absolutely false.  But Schuerholz and Cox are pretty confident that Escobar can step in and do the job now.  Not this guy.

I heard on mlb.com that Gagne basically wanted to close because he had some contract bonuses tied up into his save count.  I think Boston was willing to pay it off.  Additionally, I heard Boston is paying him the difference in the state taxes he has to pay in Boston as opposed to Texas (no state income tax)

that is what I was referring to. I think its dumb because he wouldn't necessarily close in Texas

I can't believe the folks at ESPN use him like they do....

Ahh. That makes sense then. He's a smart money man I guess. Thanks for filling me in on that info!
