MLB Trade Deadline Rumors: Which Names Are Left With Over A Week Remaining?

Is There One Blockbuster Left?
7/22/08

CC Sabathia is 3-0 with 24 strikeouts and a 1.88 ERA in his first three outings with the Milwaukee Brewers. Rich Harden is 0-1 after his first two starts with Chicago, however he's only allowed six hits in 12.1 innings, while striking out 20 in a Cubs uniform.

Needless to say, the two best pitchers available have already been moved but that doesn't mean there aren't some big names and surprises around the corner.

We're nine days away from the July 31st MLB trade deadline and the legit rumors are hard to detect among the intentionally planted distractions, but we'll do our best to breakdown who are the best available players to be moved by next Thursday.

Matt Holliday The 28-year-old face of the Rockies organization would be a tough blow to Colorado fans if he were be moved shortly after signing an extension last winter. But these are the Rockies, and they seem poised to move their talent at all times. My guess is the Rockies realize he's an attractive option, and are using their past history of dealing, to see if there's a playoff contender so desperate at the deadline, they offer a group of players GM Dan O'Dowd simply can't reject. I'll put the chances around 10% with the Angels as the potential destination.

Mark Teixeira If there's a big, world series shifting move left to be made, the Braves 1st baseman is the most likely bet. Like the Rockies, Atlanta will wait until the final hour for the best offer, but unlike Colorado, I think Tex is moved. According to some reports, Los Angeles is also actively interesting in his big bat. Teixeira is making $9 million this year, and likely to command more next year after arbitration if he stays, making him one of the more overrated around. That said, moving to the Angels could cement them as a front runner for the World Series.

George Sherrill Everyone needs bullpen help, everyone, and there's not likely to be a better option than the Orioles closer who has been a big surprise this season. He's 31, but not a free agent until 2011. I doubt his value gets any higher, so I'd put his departure at 99%. Where to? Buster Olney is hinting that the Brewers and Cardinals may battle out for his services as either a set-up man or closer.

Brian Fuentes Another lefty reliever guaranteed to move. The Rocky Mountain News reports that Boston, Detroit, Philadelphia, Arizona and the Angels were all scouting Fuentes over the weekend. The Rockies closer turned set-up was excellent at the outset of 2007, earning an All-Star selection, but crash and burning mid season and losing his job. He's returned to the position as of late, which may simply be a move to increase his value. Smart move, Mr. O'Dowd. I'd like to see the Tigers make a strong push for Fuentes, but I suspect he ends up in Boston.

It's a stretch to come up with a 5th big name that would be traded, but since the Athletics are apparently unloading all pitchers...

Huston Street Safe to bank on the Dodgers acquiring the third A's pitcher to move in the last two weeks. Hasn't lived up to his billing, but Los Angeles desperately needs bullpen help now that closer Saito is out for six weeks.

Who would you like to see your team trade for (within reason)?

If the Angels get another bat then they are the team to beat in my clouded baseball opinion.

Supposedly the Brewers have been scouting Huston Street the past couple of weeks.  While we'd probably have to pay more to get him, and he is struggling a little bit, I'd much rather take a chance on him than George Sherrill.
