Major League Baseball is Now Censoring Your Barry Bonds Signs

What First Amendment? Seeing as how Major League Baseball tolerated rampant steroid use, I guess they really are above our laws and rights.

One fan trying to express his opinion at Chase Park in Phoenix, had his sign taken away at the gates and wrote a letter to team officials. He received the following message:
"As Mr. Bonds approaches the homerun record, we have been asked by Major League Baseball to carefully screen the signs that are brought into the ballpark by our fans."
If any signs need to be removed, it's the shameless promotion garbage using network abbreviations. You know what I'm talking about.

Does MLB have the right to censor which signs you can bring to the ballpark?

Sports by Brooks has a few ideas if Bud Selig wants to take this a few steps further:
Further policies rumored to be in production include:

*No talking between pitches.
*No excessive booing after the 1st inning.
*No loud slurping from lukewarm $8 beers.
*No selling of juices of any kind at any concession stand during Bonds appearances.

Wow, this sucks. I think signs should be allowed to a certain extent. Nothing that wouldn't be allowed normally, such as cursing, and profane things like that. Otherwise, it's fair game.

Obviously, they shouldn't allow some signs, (ex. F#@$ Barry Bonds) but most they should allow.  I'm curious what the sign in question said...

Now you see why I hate going to games at Chase Field.

If you make noise, people tell you to shut up.

If you stand up to give a standing ovation to a World Series hero playing in his last game with the team, people tell you to sit down.

And apparently, if you make signs about Barry Bonds, they take them away.

From the article links above:

The messages had a consistent theme: The Giants outfielder had cheated by using steroids, and that was bad for the game. One sign read, "Thou Shalt Not Covet Impure Gains." Another implored, "Stop inflating records," with a syringe injecting and pumping up the letters. A third, resembling a scoreboard, shouted, "... Bonds needs 756 days in jail," a reference to Bonds chasing Hank Aaron's career home-run record of 755.

Slightly off topic, but related: When Portland was still under the whims of Bob Whitsitt, I was at a game where a fan had a sign that said "Trade Whitsitt" and they were thrown out of the entire game. Not for causing a problem. They were sitting up from us aways and they brought them down the stairs and removed them from the entire game. It was unbelievable. No profanity, no disturbance. Just gone.

Most of the time this feels like America. And then something like that happens, and you realize that free speech only goes so far.

Good point - If MLB is going to play Dictator they should reduce and freeze beer prices.

I'd go to more games if I didn't have to spend more on beer than I do on the ticket.

They absolutely have the right to take signs away from fans.  But there is really no need to.  It’s not that big of a deal.  That sign in Philly was not a distraction, and it didn't hurt or offend anybody so let the fans hold their stupid little signs.

I'll tell you one thing, Bonds doesn't give a $HIT what anybody has to say or writes on some sign.
