Man City boss Pellegrini laments over injuries after Chelsea defeat
After losing their perfect home record to Chelsea in a 1-0 defeat on Monday, more bad news has arrived for Manchester City. After a thorough assessment from the medical team it has been confirmed that Fernandinho will miss the next two weeks of football action due to a muscle injury.
Manchester City were missing several key players from their starting lineup ahead of the game. Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini was forced to play center back Martin Demichelis in the center of the park as a defensive midfielder to fill the void left by Fernandinho.
The Eastlands will get a chance to get back at Chelsea in the FA Cup rematch with Chelsea on February 15, but Fernandinho might miss out on that game as well. The Brazilian midfielder is joined by Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri and Javi Garcia are also on the injury list.
Alvaro Negredo was called off in the middle of the game in order to prevent him from aggravating his shoulder injury. James Milner and Jack Rodwell were on the bench, but Pellegrini decided against putting them on the field because both players weren’t a 100 percent fit for the game.
“He has a muscle injury. It will be a couple of weeks [out],” Pellegrini said. “He is a very important player for us. Jack Rodwell is coming from an injury for one month. James Milner just worked with us the last day and is not 100 percent.
“The only option I had was Demichelis. That is why Fernandinho's injury was so important, I had to change the defense.”
Injuries played a big role in Manchester City’s first home defeat of the season at home. Manchester City have won all 11 of their home games in the Premier League prior to this game.
“It not only him [Fernandinho]. Aguero, Nasri and Javi Garcia [were out]. Milner was not 100 percent, Negredo was not 100 percent,” Pellegrini added. “It was too much [of an] advantage for an important team like Chelsea [to have]. I put all the players that were in the condition to play [on the pitch], that is why I did not make the other two changes.”
Pellegrini believes Chelsea needed to defeat Manchester City at home in order to continue fighting for the League title. Chelsea and Manchester City are now on equal points, but Manchester City are a position above them, second-placed, because of a better goal difference.
