Man City boss Roberto Mancini wants teams to play without fear against Man Utd
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini claims the fear of playing against Manchester United is the biggest reason behind the Red Devils’ victories. The Italian manager believes teams are too afraid of playing against Manchester United; so much that they end up defending instead of attacking them.
Roberto Mancini questioned Manchester United’s ability to win games if their opponents believed they could defeat the Premier League leaders. The former Inter Milan manager believes Sir Alex Ferguson’s side is able to grab easy victories because his opponents see Manchester United as an undefeatable force.
The Eastlands boss criticized Premier League teams for having a “soft” mentality when facing Manchester United. Roberto Mancini was frustrated by Sunderland, who defeated Manchester City at the Stadium of Light back in December, but recorded abysmal form against Manchester United last weekend.
“No one plays well against United because they only play with fear,” Roberto Mancini said. “Every team that plays against United plays very soft because they think this game is difficult, they can't beat them. If you play strong against United, you can beat them, like you can beat us.”
Only four clubs have managed to give Manchester United a tough time this season. Manchester United’s two draws and three defeats in the Premier League were recorded with Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Norwich and Swansea City.
Tottenham Hotspur defeated Manchester United at Old Trafford before drawing at White Hart Lane. Everton and Norwich City recorded home victories while Swansea City held Manchester United to a draw at Liberty Stadium.
Roberto Mancini explained that it wasn’t lack of effort that stopped teams from performing at their best against Manchester United, but fear of losing that go to them.
“I don't think they don't play [at] 100% but their mentality is poor in that game,” Roberto Mancini continued. “They think they can do nothing but I don't think that is true. If you play with mentality, in football you can beat every team.”
Roberto Mancini admits Manchester United has dominated English football for over two decades now, but didn’t affect him psychologically.
“We don't have the same importance like United at this moment,” Roberto Mancini added. “Maybe in 10 years, it will be the same. The history is very important.”
Manchester City will return to the place of their 6-1 victory from last season on Monday night. Roberto Mancini understands it would be hard to record such a feat again, but is confident his side will give a good fight for the three points.
“The 6-1 is in history,” Roberto Mancini continued. “We can talk about this for another 200 years but it is impossible to do this result another time but I think we know we can beat them because they are not better than us.”
